When did SGC up their price per card from $10 to $15?

A couple of months ago apparently. BTW, they also increased the charge for oversized slabs from $50 to $85.

They also charge $20 per card to put a silk in a mylar sleeve prior to putting it into a slab. OUT OF CONTROL!!!

I think I am done with them. Why bother to put $10 cards in $15 sleeves. Always have been a fan but no more.

Agree. Once my latest submission comes back, I will be using PSA.

CGC pricings look pretty good, especially for higher end product. I will be curious how they catch on. Andy Broome from BGS fame is the head grader at CGC. I’m holding out hope.

They've upped the price of oversized slabs from $50 to $85? I have a set of R312's - 12 PSA's, 2 SGC's, one BVG and 35 raw. If I want to have SGC slab the rest of my set, I just send them the cards and a check for $2975? Do I have that right?

It would actually be $4,080 to get the rest of your R312 cards slabbed by them (48 cards x $85 per card).

I've returned to raw cards until the dust settles with everything.

All of the tpg have raised their prices. They almost have to do it to slow submissions. People are sending in cards that are worth $15 or less in a 10. Maybe the price change will force people to think hard about what they are submitting.

I believe this also requires a custom cut to the insert, I know it used to, something they’ve always been upfront about charging more for at least since 2007. Let’s be completely transparent and not just tell part of the story.

I have 2 of these that do not have the custom insert to prevent sliding and all 3 of these cards in question for this submission have their backs so they would not slip anyhow so not necessary in this case. Just a money grab in this specific example. Now if the cards didn’t have backs, a completely different story.

Nope trying to maximize profits and keep costs down is what they are doing...Business 101...

I would think every business that has more orders at current prices than it can satisfy, raises its prices. Higher prices help "maximize" profits in the short run, help allocate the available capacity to the customers that value it the highest (it is misleading, but accurate to view this as "trying to drive customers away"), and provide the incentive and investable capital necessary to expand capacity in the longer term. I'm not sure why you view this as inconsistent with Economics 101.

+1. I love SGC, but it's not feasible to spend $100 a pop on cards to get them back in a reasonable amount of time. The standard service is still taking months on end, and for that - I'll have no problem enjoying my raw cards. I know more or less what they would grade anyway.

I know bicycle custom framebuilders who have waitlists in the 5 year range.
Their recommendation to a newer builder who wasn't comfortable with his waitlist getting to 3 years? Raise prices until the waitlist gets back to where you're comfortable.

With a 6-10 month backlog at every tpg, they have more business than they can handle. Keeping prices low will perpetuate that problem. PSA just hired a bunch of new graders. In time, when they catch up, and need more business to keep all of those employees busy, they can bring prices back down to encourage orders. In other words, Eco101 - supply and demand.

that would be pretty every supplier in a free enterprise economy, who can not quickly increase it's supply of goods and services, to meet demand. It's really the norm. You simply don't see it that often, because most suppliers don't have so much excess demand, that customers have to wait, for many months, for their product or service to be delivered.

There is nothing cheap about PSA. If you want inexpensive subs you have to have a minimum 20 cards under a certain dollar amount and within a certain year range. Even as an auction house I struggle to get cards to fall under there critieria to get the cheaper rates.

By the way their lowest regular price is $50.

Grading is no longer an inexpensive venture and I do not see it changing in the future.

That's what happens when everyone wants to become a dealer and sends in 100 (flavor of the month hot rookie) and turn around sell on ebay. These companies are flooded by these flippers and the reason most of them hate the longer turn around times. That flavor of the month hot rookie just got sent back to the minors or better....scheduled for Tommy John surgery! Flippers need their cards ASAP.

I try to explain to my 17 year old son...every table at most of the shows have STACKS and STACKS of Acuna "bat down" PSA 10 cards ( or insert every other top prospect from the last 3 years..

I've never sent anything in to be graded but when I do they can take as long as they please. I'm not concerned if mine go up or down in value, I just like my cards.

This post doesn't fit the narrative on here that SGC is greedy, and why don't things cost what they used to. It's almost a waste as it's way more fun to complain and thus same posters will make the same lament in a new thread within a few weeks.

Of course, no one at the same time wants to acknowledge the argument that these cards now bring 10 x as much when sold and thus as an integral part of that economy TPG's should also have their work valued similarly, they just want their cheap labor grading.

Oh, and anyone thinking CGC will provide a cheaper service - go look at their charging scale.
The hobby is growing exponentially, especially with modern now considered a serious investment, and the backbone of that growth is the relative stability that the third party grader provides to establish the transfer of material.
People on here should be celebrating the obvious re-energizing of the hobby as new collectors will fuel passion and interest going forward, not the wizened hobby specialists on here.

This place, this site, the collectors on here, hold a very important role in maintaining a bank of historical knowledge that ALL collector cards will be living off forever, but it's no more important than what is of interest to the modern collector and how they choose to collect.

You seem to take issue with long-time collectors enjoying the hobby in the manner which appeals to them.

Card collecting is a fairly large space these days. There's plenty of room for everyone. Relax and enjoy the portion of the hobby that resonates with you.

I would like to see all the low dollar value cards that are subbed for 6-12 months as a high end expensive cards. $35 per card is what I would like to see on any card with a declared value under $150.

I think this would allow the grading companies time to catch up and increase their turn around times. Worth a shot for 6-12 cards. To much junk being subbed.

It's the caterwauling over grading flaws and costs when the obvious choice is that you don't need to participate to enjoy the hobby that is my point.

What is the value over complaining and disparaging grading and graders?
To return the hobby to something it may have been many years ago?

Long time hobby collectors can rubber band, 9 holder sheet, loose in a shoebox, slab, put under glass, or any other that they choose.
I celebrate it all and don't rubbish their choice.
I'm 52, not exactly little chick, been in the game in the States 20 years and 35 overall.

Perhaps you miss the constant and vacuous threads/posts on here about the disaster that some paint grading. I should probably try and do better to do the same, it's just so damned hard and repetitive and often completely baseless.
