Vintage is crazy expensive, but I enjoy grabbing players i like. Here are a couple I had framed
|
I collect Scottie Upshall and I have around 20 actual game used jersey. Starting with his junior jersey when he played for the Kamloops Blazers to the end of his career with St Louis.
The only pro jersey I would really like to obtain is his Milwaukee Admiral jersey. I have one of his Team Canada jerseys as well.A bunch of his game used sticks. I just wish I was in a place where I could display them.Thanks. |
My friend, Barry, has about 2000+. I was at a card show within the last 6 or 7 years and I saw the Nystrom jersey (Isles fans know what I'm talking about:D) and I called him up. I think he dropped $45k on it.
He's got just about every Islander that ever suited up, he's got a cool Charlie Simmer from his 50 in 50 pursuit. All the 80s stars. He's got a ton... |

I did, but sold off my collection which was all NJ Devils. I had a few early 1980's- Dave Lewis, Rick Meagher, Ken Daneyko practice jersey plus about 10-15 1990's, no big stars.

I didn’t realize these were authentic jerseys until maybe 20 years ago. He’d buy them, wear them. He lived in Jericho, got divorced in his mid 50s, married his high school sweet heart. I saw the Nystrom jersey at the card show. It was encased. When I went out with Barry and a bunch of us, he pulled it out and had it hanging on, I kid you not, a plastic hanger. I’m not sure where those jerseys are or how he stores them. The space he’s living in is not huge by any stretch of the imagination. I just shot him a text trying to verify the # of jerseys |
Last time we talked , he said that the jersey deserved to be on display at Belmont (néw isles arena 2 miles from my house). I said , “Barry that’s nice of you to donate it...” He scoffed and said something like “Donate? I paid $45k for that...these guys are multimillionaires!”

yes I can understand his point there. They are expensive to buy and unless you have some connection to that player they go down in value pretty quickly. Unless of course you buy a player that is relevant or is historic to the league. The guy I collected was never even a star. Just an average player that has had a pretty long career. My problem with collecting him was that he moved from team to team so much. So I needed to keep buying jerseys. If he had stay with 1 or 2 teams over his career it would not have been so bad..Thanks. |

I didn’t realize my other buddy, Peter, wrote this up. I should have known! Peter, by the way, was impetus of my getting back into my T206 collection. I was having some serious FoMo watching him post all his 70s and 80s ticket stubs on Twitter. |
Very nice read, And man that lineup of game used jersey hanging there sure looks awesome. Thanks for sharing this information.take care.

Yes that is the great thing about that.Mine are all game used as well and all with COA from the team. |
Yep, I do have a handful of autograph jerseys that were game "issued" or "retail authentic". But, the majority are game worn. I mainly collect a handful of players though. Joe Thornton and Erik Karlsson being two of them.

This is a great thread guys. Thanks for the pics and stories. I was an Isle's fan in my youth and had a store bought Jersey that was given to me one year from Santa :D
No idea where that is now, other than the obvious, but I sure wish I still had it! |

Hockey Jersey collecting is huge and my favorite part of my collection. I collect old wools (really special), Rangers, College hockey (especially Harvard), and my favorite players. All game worn. I rarely buy modern jerseys because they have such little wear and are only worn for around 1-5 games it seems.
Here are two favorite jerseys, one of Alexei Kovalev which is “hammered” and an Allen Bourbeau jersey from the game in which Harvard won their only NCAA championship. Hard to beat the connection to a sport that these represent. |
