REA - How Did You Do?

2 Attachment(s)
I managed to pick up two cards that were pretty high on my want list -- the 1914 CJ Plank and the 1916 Zeenut Billy Southworth. How did the rest of you do?

sportscardpete 12-06-2020 11:16 PM

I thought some things looked fairly soft - was expecting all the buzz in the hobby to shoot a lot of things to the moon. I picked up the m101-3 Cobb which has been on my want list. A few other Cobb postcards seemed weak, though the Azoras looked so cool.

Nice cards. I picked up these 2 and the e103 Bender. I really like the original flexichrome art for the 1975 Topps Cub's team card.

Plank.....

Paul, I was bidding on the Plank also! Great card! Looks the the PSA 8 Mikan RC set an all time record. Looks like after fees and taxes it will be like $105,000!!! Wowser!

Back in the 1980s, as a college student, I set up at the Ed Keetz show at the Polish Community Center near Albany NY. I sold a Joe Jackson card for $150 (doubled my money) because it had a weird red ink mark on his face.

Got that card back tonite. Paid a smidge more than $150. :) Was willing to go higher!

I had my first ever REA win in this auction. I am not much of an autograph guy at all, but I am happy to pick up a signed Amelia Earhart check. I know it is not a big purchase compared to what else will undoubtedly be shown in this thread, but this was a pretty big buy for me.

The price seemed soft IMO compared to other Earhart checks that have sold in recent years. Under $1,000 for a slabbed Earhart check seemed like a great deal compared to what random scraps of paper signed by her sell for.

Nice pick up on that Plank. Those La Azora Cobbs were great, hope a member got them.

Picked up 8 lots, underpaid for some, par value on others, overpaid for one, but checked off a few long time wants on my list. Missed out on a couple steals but had to stay on budget.

PS: Andy, I got your E98 Clarke.

Time for a Whiskey...

Eddie,

All I can say is WOW and tbh, if I had seen that check, it waould not have gone that cheap! Absolutely beautiful piece of history. Most likely hidden by 100K crazy sportscards!

Great pick up!

Peace, Mike

PS A similar PSA 6 check sold for $2k about 2 years ago! Great find! Good job!

Thanks so much, Mike. :) I have long been interested in Earhart. The check did not even have an opening bid on it until a couple days ago. I figured the bids would explode on the final day, but was shocked when I looked at the lot a little after midnight and it was closed.

I like that the check is made out to Paul Mantz, an Earhart friend and advisor who said before her final flight that she was not ready for such an attempt.

Picked up this collection of signed lithographs from the 1953 Topps artwork that Marriott had acquired in the 1980s. Don't know much about 'em other than what was in the description, but think they will display beautifully with my complete '53 set.

Very cool Eddie. I looked at that for quite awhile. I 100% agree with Mike, it's a terrific piece. Congrats on that pickup.

Hope this is OK, as it's not vintage baseball.

I've not won much from REA over the years, maybe one or two other items. However, thrilled to win this last night in the extra hours.

Thank you, Bob. :) I have been Facebook friends with the manager of the Amelia Earhart Birthplace Museum in Atchison, KS for a couple years. I have posted some of my Earhart cards from the 1930s in different discussions on the museum's Facebook page, and the people working at the museum were not aware of what is out there card-wise of Earhart prior to her disappearance.

Excellent pick ups. I thought prices were generally strong - holy crap on the 1914 CJ Matty!! And the Altoona Ruth was still going strong when I closed the computer and went to bed. A few other cards I watched out of interest that did very well include the 1907 Dietsche Cobb Batting, the E102 Wagner throwing, and the 1914 CJ Chance. Most everything else I was watching went strong.

I picked up the T206 Elberfeld, Washington Portrait, Blue Old Mill (shock) and a long overdue E103 Cobb (dont see these centered often)

ngrow9 12-07-2020 04:58 AM

I struck out last night, but if anyone here won the lot of Federal League player contracts and is interested in moving one, please let me know.

notfast 12-07-2020 05:31 AM

Tapped out on the e103 Cobb (glad it was won by someone here though) and lost by a single bid on the d304 Wagner. Probably going to be kicking myself for not trying one more bid on that one.

Needed SOMETHING so grabbed the cheapest e90-1 Mathewson with the back damage and old SGC slab. A consolation prize.

I picked up a few items and I moved the market in the process....

The strategy of checking VCP to find a 'market price' is a fool's errand. it only leads to missing out on items. Where a card sold for on October 15th and June 9th is irrelevant. This is the Wild West, buy the stuff you want.

obcmac 12-07-2020 07:23 AM

Congratulations to everyone who picked something up!

Glad you got the Blue Old Mill. I know you wanted one for your back collection. Also nice to know where it went. With so few of them, it's good to know where they all are. Plus I think it went for a very fair price. Being the Washington variation, I figured it would add a few thousand more on top of a standard price Blue Old Mill. What ever a standard price is lol.

MattyC 12-07-2020 07:31 AM

Lost the pencil Ruth by one damn bid.

Walked away with a consolation prize that I realize now is only gonna remind me of the loss on the other lot. Crappy Monday.

Very nice!

I had bid on that, but went to bed last night with my money in the lead on something else. Woke up to find I didn't get that one either.

It was a very inexpensive night for me!
(Although I more than made up for it with holiday shopping yeserday.)

Whoever won the Cobb back got a steal? or Cobb back already filled all the demand of the collectors who want one and just "flat out" from now on?

First time in a while I won any cards. I collect mostly Memorabilia And my big purchase was the Mike Trout Bat. But Very happy with the W601's and a nice OJ Hof'er

BumBum 12-07-2020 10:24 AM

This was my first time bidding in the REA auction. I am very happy that I was able to pick up an Old Judge John Clarkson for my Chicago Cubs HOF collection. It’s not the greatest condition, but it still has great eye appeal and I think it was a great value, especially for a card that has not been easy to locate (and never at this low of a price). I wish had the funds to make a run at that Old Judge King Kelly since the Chicago variation seems very hard to come by, but dang it, it is Christmas and I have two kids at home.

I almost never see that card centered anywhere close to that nice! Great pickup.

I had a 1st happen with this auction - I placed my usual group of "placeholder bids" when the auction opened and actually won 1 of them!! Nice T027 broadleaf. Would have likely made a run at a couple of others, but there is so much more stuff coming that I want more!!
