What is your LEAST favorite card/pose?
1 Attachment(s)
I hate this card. It’s not Cy Young. Not even close. It’s Irv Young, and it’s an ugly pose to boot. This singular card/pose keeps me from wanting to ever pursue the E98 set. I don’t want a set where one of the key HOFers isn’t even pictured on his own card?! I think the E98 set, with all its color variations, is generally a very cool set. But this card literally ruins the set for me. I hate it!
Let’s see your least favorite card/pose and why.... PS - my post is in no way intended to distract from Casey2296’s thread and the very cool project he is working on. It was that thread- and seeing Irv Young’s ugly mug atop Cy Young’s name- that was the catalyst for this thread, but I think what he has done is awesome, especially in all green |

I can't stand this card because so many people try to say it's a horizontal pose in the set. And when I see it displayed horizontally on eBay I actually get pissed.
. |
Ha! I'm honored I could trigger you. My candidate would be the ugly ass E90-1 Joe Jackson that collectors have convinced themselves is worth $$K.
PS: the whole Irv Young thing bothers me too tbh. The guy I bought that card from didn't even know it wasn't Cy Young. Once I explained that to him I was able to purchase that card within my self imposed budget. |

Great idea for a thread.
The best player in the set, and THIS is the artwork? It's not even close! |
I hate it but wouldn't trade it

I don't mind black-and-white cards, although this one seems particularly drab. What bothers me about this card is it shows the greatest pitcher of the era batting. I realize that in 1921 pitchers hitting was taken more seriously than it is today and Johnson was above average with the stick (for a pitcher). But the National League almost implemented a DH as long ago as 1893 and Connie Mack was an early advocate. So, even in 1921, pitcher hitting was viewed as a chink in the game's appeal.
Having said all that, however, I have to admit I love the card because it is so perverse and therefore unique that, well, you know. Never mind. https://www.net54baseball.com/attach...1&d=1606391793 |
T201 Cobb. What a disaster.

All those terrible air brush jobs Topps and OPC did on both baseball and hockey.
Also Topps football cards without helmet logos. I was at at card show where Garry Unger was a signer and was getting his 68-69 OPC rookie card signed and was quick to point out his head was on Norm Ullman's body. We had a bit of fun with that one. |

I know I asked for least favorite, and I gave mine already, but I really also hate these cards: e91 Wagner and Tinker. They are the same person/pose, and it looks like neither Honus Wagner nor Joe Tinker. Two of the biggest stars of the era and they can’t even give them different figures??!! Literally, all they did was change the name of the city on the jersey.

I will be more than happy to take that ugly, orange Irv Young E105 off of the owner's hands. I love the orange...what can I say.
Here's my pick. |
That's going to be tough to beat Anson, hard to figure on that selection for the card.

I think Roger Hornsby was cursed with a few cards with terrible design choices. This one needs no explanation. A beautiful card if the type had been placed somewhere else or the artwork had been modified to accommodate the type somewhere else.

As they planned the 1974 set, I imagine the conversation in the Topps art department went something like this...
"We've pictured Hammerin' Hank from every conceivable angle over his career, so what can we possibly do differently, people?" "Boss, I've got it!!!!!!! Let's basically show the back of his head!!!!!" "Absolutely brilliant!!!!!!!!! And next year, we'll take another picture from that very same photoshoot and airbrush the heck out of it!!!!!" Attachment 428181 |
It almost looks like Topps was Comparing Allen's sideburns with Aaron's clean shave
|
Pointing Forward Ford
Least favorite pose: any card showing Whitey Ford pointing forward in his look-I-just-threw-a-pitch pose (e.g., Topps ‘57, ‘62, ‘64, ‘66, ‘67). One of the all time great pitchers, but one of the all time crappiest poses.

I will never agree with the popularity of this set (and especially this one). Especially since most other Jackies show a great smile or resemblance of him.
It's even worse than the usual children-like quality '48 Leaf drawings and poses. His expression, the horribly done extra blackface, the rest of the card's coloring.... https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/HugAA...lp/s-l1600.jpg |

I'm a fan of Connie Mack's cards, except for this one. I traded it away a while ago.

T206 Bill Burns with glove on wrong is my least favorite, they tried to correct the same image on his T3 Turkey Red but all they ended up doing was adding another finger and making it look like Burns had polydactyly. It is all I see when I look at those cards.

Unfortunately, bad photos on cards aren't limited to the days "when it was just a game."
2019 Topps Now #32, Pete Alonso. You can't see his face or uniform number, so you have to take Topps' word for it that the guy in the photo really is the "Polar Bear." https://live.staticflickr.com/7925/4...4a681e0200.jpg |

Although I initially indicated that "no explanation is needed", here is the explanation: The original photo (see below) was taken from the 1947 All-Star game. Ted was sliding into second base, which was being covered by St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Marty Marion. Marion wasn't under contract with Fleer in 1959, so he was air-brushed out. Hence, the "quicksand that butts right up against a chemical tailings pond." |

Can't say it looks more like one over the other. But I still like the orange.
|
E91 and T207 cards are the worst in my book. A lot of the strip cards are pretty bad as well.
