FS: 1905 Mathewson cabinet photo
Ever see this before?
1905 cabinet photo of the Romeo, MI local baseball team with a couple of ringers in Christy Mathewson and his catcher Frank Bowerman. Romeo was Bowerman's hometown and Matty was visiting following the Giants 1905 World Series win (you can find many newspaper articles about Matty's visit). Comes from the family of one of the local players where it has been for 100+ years. Names of all players written on back, as well as a much later newspaper clipping looking back on Mathewson's 1905 season. Most likely one of a kind, beautiful early Mathewson item. Measures 8" x 10" This one hurts to let go as I'm sure it will never be seen again. I once owned a scorecard from that game. I saw the names and bought it right away. Sold it to another board Member. Sam Thompson played in game as well. And I was told that the scorecard was resold to relitive of Thompson. ( It is my understanding that Matty played in at least 2 games while visiting Bowerman for hunting trip) I will update with picture of scorecard.
Sorry only pictures I could find are a little fuzzy. But as you can see from date , 1903 that Matty and Bowerman played with Romeo on more than 1 occasion. And I think 1903 is the game that they lost. Despite 2 hall of Famers Sam Thompson and Christy Mathewson. Nice story from a different time. And your photo is such a crisp clear image...just amazing.. GREAT PHOTO!!!!! |
Oh wow, thanks, can't wait to see the scorecard!
That's correct, Matty played two games and believe he lost the second. How the heck did that happen?? |
Unbelievable piece! Good luck with the sale.

matty in romeo
The Bowerman family owned an apple orchard and a bowling alley in Romeo. I was told that there had once been a sign as you entered town saying "Romeo home of Frank Bowerman Christy Mathewson's catcher."
The Pescha RPPC's are highly regarded among postcard collectors. The shot of Romeo is typical of the stuff he did. lumberjack |
