Why No WS Cards Issued in 1966?
I was just wondering why Topps didn't issue any cards of the 1965 World Series in 1966. Just curious. Was it an oversight? Any back story to this? Just thought I'd ask if anybody might know something!

I’ve thought about this myself. Must be a bias against the Dodgers, whom Topps had no problem publicizing, with the very first card of the 1967 set (The Champs), something they had never done before or after. All this is said tongue-in-cheek...sort of.

You'd have to think it was intentional in that they had been doing the World Series cards since 1960. Those would be an interesting set to create. |
Topps brought back multi player cards in 1966 and had the League Leader cards in the middle of the set where the World Series cards might have been rather than the beginning. Plus 40 + team rookie cards. Then in bringing back World Series cards in 67-69 they did it in black and white and not color as before.

Cost is probably why they just had one long insert series in 1966 as well (which lasted two more years). Once Duryea got settled mid-year, the test/limited/extra issues exploded. Seems like some change in management philosophy occurred at the same time. They soon figured (or relearned) how to get Sporting News sponsorship for the 1968 All Stars then for the 1969 and 1970 WS cards. Sport Mag sponsorship too for Basketball in 1970. |

I just figured it was because it was the Twins. No one likes the Twins. :D

I purchased a privately-created 1965 World Series set a few years ago. I'll hunt for it and post images once I find it.
As a Koufax fanatic, I was always looking for one and wondering why there had not been one. You can count on the amazing girth of hobby knowledge on the board to provide the answer...bravo! . |

I'm not entirely certain, but I think one of Nostradamus' quatrains examined this issue:
After Abraham’s sinistral warrior bowed out, the people of the angels and those of paired cities, vied through a septet, the wood thrashed the sphere, and the cardboard kinfolk of Duryea shall be party to the fraud. Who knows?? |
Maybe after the last series was issued the Topps management team was having a staff meeting when one of the attendees said "holy sh_t we forgot the World Series cards"
