1914 Cracker Jack HOF cards
 

Who would you put in the group after the big ones, Matty, Cobb, Wagner, Wajo? I suppose the next tier starts with Lajoie and speaker but after that it’s debatable. Who would you pick for the next few most significant cards? Leaving out Joe Jackson since we’re just discussing HOF cards for this purpose.

Ive always liked the Rube Marquard, Sam Crawford, and Harry Hooper cards.

Alexander, Chance, and Rickey

I’m a fan of the Branch Rickey. I have his 1915 CJ and really like having a card from this era of his life and career.

I would put Plank in the second tier too.

I would have Alexander in tier 1 and Lajoie in tier 2.

Great list! thanks to everyone who had input. Im trying to decide which way to go with the cracker jacks after Ive acquired all the big boys....do I save up for a JJ or do I pursue some of the lower tiered HOFers and maybe get a 15 Matty to go with?

Probably an unpopular view, but in my opinion, if you're collecting the 14 CJ for financial reasons you're collecting it for the wrong reason. And you're more than welcome to tell me to fuck off, I'll still have a beer with you before first pitch.

I don’t think he said he was doing it as an investment (so what if he is?), but I just think he meant that a joe Jackson would be expensive so he would save up some funds to be able to get one. At least that’s how I read it....

Hey I did debate on whether or not to include Alexander in the top tier. A really great argument could be made for Alexander to be included and I would have no problem if he was included.

As for LaJoie, he is definitely top tier for me. Considered to be the best second baseman in baseball history and Cleveland even named their team after him!

To be clear, IMHO collecting the 14 CJ should be a spiritual experience not a financial one. And again, you can tell me to fuck off and we'll still drink together, unless you endorse the DH rule, then we're going to have a problem...

I'm hoping one day the HOF will add the following names from the '14 CJ set:

103 Shoeless Joe
143 Daubert
108 Magee
10 McInnis
22 Smoky Joe

That is a minority position. Hornsby is widely considered the best 2b. Many consider Collins #2, but I would consider Lajoie his equal. Really you could have 9 tier one guys as Plank is the greatest LHP of the dead ball era.

Alexander is ridiculously underrated. 3rd in wins, 2nd in shutouts, 5th in WAR for pitchers. Tied with Matty in the 1st stat and ahead of him in the later two. He is only one of three pitchers to win the triple crown 3 times, along with Walter Johnson and Sandy Koufax. The 1914 CJ is his first mainstream baseball card.

I would go with a list similar to this one too. Good job.

+1, although I would make tweeter tier between Matty etc and Lajoie, etc, and would add Pratt even though not an HOFer

Tier 1- Matty, Jackson, Cobb
Tier 2 - Wagner, Wajo
Tier 3- lajoie, Plank, Speaker, Pratt
Tier 4 - E Collins, Chance, Tinker, Rickey, Alexander
Tier 5- Evers, Baker, Brown, Bresnahans, wheat, Bender, Crawford
Tier 6 - all others and maybe add Wood

I would put Chance in the 2nd tier. Rarely do you see that card available and when you do they go for top $. Not having a card in the 15 set seems to drive up demand.

I agree about Alexander he was exceptional for a long time and grossly underrated. Also I move alexander up the list to the top tier based on the fact that most people consider the 14 CJ as his true rookie card, and that adds a cool factor for me.
