Affordable Ty Cobb cards?
I would really like to add a Cobb to my collection. I unfortunately missed the train on his t206 portrait cards as I know they've all shot up in value. I know the definition of "affordable" depends on your budget, is there anything under 1K of his that's worth owning? If Not I guess I'll save up.
|
Under 1k you're pretty much limited to the oddball stuff. T201 is an option if you like those, he's on the back though. Maybe the 1914 Polo Grounds card. You've got a few different issues in the 20s along with strip cards, but the strip cards mostly look pretty ugly. If you're willing to deviate from a card, there are people that like the B18s or the Sweet Cap pins/discs. Just a few ideas, I'm sure there are others.

A few years after his retirement, but the 1933 Goudey Sport Kings is a really nice looking one that even a Good conditioned card would present well.
|
We have some options in our auction that starts Wednesday. T201 and T202 Cobbs as well as a couple of nice strip cards that received numeric grades.
|
In my opinion, there are plenty of options for Cobb cards under $1000. If you want a really early card you can likely pick up a rookie team card for under 1000 if you look carefully. Higher grade game cards can be acquired as well… To me these are underappreciated and have room to grow. Strip cards, exhibit cards, sport kings as mentioned.
|
T202 Cobb cards would be your best bet. It is a really underated and beautiful set.

The Polo Grounds and National Game Cards from 1913 are nice. You could also look into memorabilia. There are some nice notebook covers.
|
Thanks for the responses gentlemen, I might go the route and save up a little bit more, The t202 option looks appealing though. I have a slight fear that prices might climb again but here's to hoping I'm wrong.
|
I feel like the E93 Cobb has been staying pretty flat over the past few years, while other tobacco / caramel cards have seen big climbs. I just looked and don't really see much on eBay right now, but the last couple of sales I remember seemed pretty reasonable.
|
I would say the exhibit cards are your best bet under $1000. I got a SGC 3, 1921 Exhibit in the spring for less than $1000. As others have already said, just keep your eyes open.

Tom Barker, National Game, some strip cards
|
You can pick up the 1907 Tigers team RPPC for $1,000 I think. It's not a Cobb solo issue but it is a rookie image.

James,
I picked this off Ebay about a month ago for $1175 so there are some nice ones out there! Good luck in your quest! 1913 Tom Barker Game Card as a few others mentioned. Peace, Mike Attachment 425022 |

This is not mine, and I have no connection to the seller, but it's tough to go wrong with something that was issued during the height of his career and looks great on a wall.
If you took it to a restoration place they could probably remove most of that stain, and you would still have plenty of money left over for a nice dinner with the wife, ice cream for the kids, and maybe even a different frame if you aren't a fan of the one it comes in. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Ty-Cobb-Bas...IAAOSw1NxfMatH Not that it really matters, but it's also not the 1910 supplement #1, this one is a later version (with a different picture), but because the Standard Catalog doesn't list two Cobb m113 issues, only one, it's an easy mistake for somebody to make. (Edit) I contacted the seller and he removed mention of it being #1, which is a good commentary on his selling ethics. Just a thought, Doug |

I got this T205 about a year ago for a bit under $1000.
Similar reasons to yours ... I wanted a Cobb and couldn’t afford most. I guess it would cost a little more now. It’s no jewel with the obvious paper loss. Still, I’m very happy with it. Good luck with your search. |
I got this one last year at the tri-Star show for 440.00 after some negotiation.
It might be a little over graded but the price was right. https://photos.imageevent.com/rucker...6A72F0B19.jpeghttps://photos.imageevent.com/rucker...607BD7F28.jpeg |
im looking at cards on fleabay and many/most cards suggested can not really be found for 1000 or less anymore.

Colgan chip is one you can get reasonable.

I would think you could pick up a lower grade though still presentable 1927 for under a grand. |

T200 - Cobb looks great in that photo and you get the whole team!
|
Or,1976 Topps - such a freaky image:

It is small and unattractive, but the W555 Cobb card, which some still consider his rookie card, could be affordable in lower grade.

You can also go to more "recent" cards 1960, 1961 Fleer at a higher grade and work backwards. Or 1960 and 1961 Nu-Cards etc. These cards are 60 years old and reasonably priced . Or get a modern card with a piece of his bat or jersey. Those are neat, touching his jersey. I know that is weird.

I'd go for a card with nice eye appeal that you'd be happy with since no matter what card you pick, you'll be bound to spend $$$$. So make sure you're happy with your purchase. Good thing Cobb has a bunch of very nice looking cards. Here are some of my suggestions for more affordable ones in no particular order:
(1) T206 Red Cobb (2) M116 Cobb (3) T202 Cobb (Cobb Steals Third) (4) Orange Borders Cobb (5) Glove Extends Up variations (i.e. E93/E94/E98, etc) |
E98 e93 or 1932 us caramel, 1933 sporting kings
|
Even though SGC doesn't have the ability to grade them, or at least didn't, I like the Fro Joy cards....Just be careful and ask for board advice before buying one.... :) Many, many times we know more than the current crop of opinionators.

The Rogers Peet Cobby in regular condition might be under 1k.... These were from my prior collection. I remember I bought 5 packs with Cobbys in them from the heirs of a guy that worked at the company. I had them graded and they were 7s and 8s as I recall... https://luckeycards.com/phuncrogerspeetset.jpg |
