Is anybody going to his house today?

I bumped into him at the card show in Raleigh. I thought he was living in NC?

mr2686 10-02-2020 02:49 PM

Hmmm, knowing his history, I would wonder if all of that memorabilia is "real". LOL

doug.goodman 10-02-2020 03:59 PM

The pictures are amazing, looks like junk stores / antique malls I frequent with one of my rockstar bosses. When I sent him the link he said "looks like my rat piles" hahahaha.

That might be part of the reason he didn't go thru an auction house...

That Ted Williams sig in the video looks like an old John Henry job from the 90s.

Poor Denny can't catch a break... tough audience here :p

Thanks, Fred

You made me laugh. I needed it. Bring back Rodney Dangerfield. We need him now more than ever!

Peace.

I will say his jokes were hilarious in that video - the part about getting hit w railroad ties was priceless...

Wish I could go. Love to find some of his stuff from his playing days in Des Moines.

I'm sure most people would agree with my tendency to believe that Denny would have sold off most anything of value years ago as money was needed. (I did not watch the video.)

And no, he's not in NC. He's in greater Detroit and has been co-hosting a fairly entertaining podcast for a while.

Call him and ask him, he seems pretty accessible.

Convicted of stealing money from a pension plan. Screwed over hard working honest people who depended on that money. What a real winner, wouldn’t do anything to give that man a penny.

It reminds me of a collectible that was floating around many years ago. It was a check from McLain, made out to, and endorsed on the back by Catfish Hunter, that had bounced. McLain had been a show promoter and Catfish had been one of the autograph signers.

Looks like they pulled a few items due to the signatures being highly questionable.

Yeah, this is my feeling as well. Just a trash human being that I would not give money to.

I know Denny McLain f'd up, but I like him. He comes across as a real person. I like to believe in redemption, and the man has paid his debt to society.

Denny was very active on Facebook a few years ago so I "friended" him. he was the only ex-ball player I ever friended because we had a mutual acquaintance that I wanted to ask him about. he would regularly comment on my posts much like an old friend would and it was interesting to ask him an occasional question about his experiences and get a straight answer from him. I made a comment about myself being grossly overweight once and I woke up the next morning to a Facebook Messenger message from Denny letting me know that he was once very overweight and went through the weight loss surgery process which was apparently once very successful for him. He told me of what he found were the pros and cons of the surgery and even offered to hook me up with his doctors as he felt they were excellent.

He didn't have to reach out to me like he did with an unsolicited testimonial and a genuine care for my health which I always very much appreciated. Sure, he was a turd of a guy at one time but I have always been taught to forgive especially when someone has paid their debt to society. I just see him now as a older gentleman with some great stories and seems to be somewhat lonely after the loss of his wife not long ago. I wish him well.

Humans are fallible. He reached out to you because he could connect with your personal experience. He stole money from working folks because he couldn't connect with their personal experience.

Or, maybe, he stole their money because he was an asshole

Casey2296 10-06-2020 11:29 PM

He certainly was an asshole to the folks he ripped off, he obviously wasn't an asshole to the user who made the comment about him.

People can be complicated. Ty Cobb was an enormous jerk but was not nearly the monster that Al Stump portrayed him as which has seemingly stuck to him post-mortem.

The Detroit Free Press ran an article, suspecting many items were fake.

So if they are supposedly from McLain's personal collection, and now deemed fake, what are the odds Denny didn't know they were problematic?

What are the odds Barry Halper didn't know some of his stuff was bad?

I think it's just more of the same old schtick from Dennis McLain.......... A tiger can't change his stripes so to speak.
