What's your daydream unopened "find"
Over the past few decades, there have been some high-profile finds, introducing some new or high-grade material to the hobby. Vintage unopened material seems to be the rarest of rare when it comes to these finds. I know we've all daydreamed of stumbling into an old warehouse or general store in an abandoned town, only to find a box/case/trunk full of xxxxxxxxx.
What would your unopened box be and why? Would you open it? |
A case of Old Mill Cigarettes with T210s in them.
|
Unopened? At the moment I will take a case of 1961 Fleer basketball: 66 card set with two RCs each of Chamberlain, Baylor and West, plus two cards of Russell; that's 12% of the cards in each set. I would have all but one of the boxes certified as from an unopened case to be auctioned off, then open one box for fun on a livestream video.
If we gotta go with a box only, I will take a box of 1952 Topps hi #s. I'd have to auction off that sucker, though, no ripping fun for me. If I had to open the box and bust the packs, definitely 1969 Topps basketball. That would be an epic rip. If we are talking a fantasy find, gotta be a cigar box of T cards with a T206 Wagner in high grade, because I could retire on the Wagner and enjoy the rest of the collection. |
I am currently working on two different unopened deals that would qualify. I don’t want to jinx by talking too much about it.

A second example of the 1904 Allegheny Base Ball Card Game.

A 1933 Goudey Box would be awesome.

Are there any unopened Goudey baseball packs out there? |
Years ago, Ted Koch told me that years before that, he and a partner found a box and a half of 1933 Goudeys in the basement of an old drug store. When they got back to the hotel room, they opened the packs and threw away the wrappers and the boxes.
As far as the cards go, they had sat so long that the bubblegum had adhered to the card it was next to and even soaking them would not remove the gum without damaging the card. David |
An unopened 1914 Cracker Jack box...
|
I'd love to pull a T202 out of a pack of cigarettes. I know they're not a premier set but I feel like it would be so cool to slide one of those out of the pack.

Fantasy
Divers dredging New York harbor find cases of 1952 Topps High Numbers still intact protected all these years by encased mud and rocks Okay I know this isnt possible but it would make a great find!!
|
Ty Cobb tin with Cobb if that was actually a thing. Otherwise, a Breisch Williams E107 Wagner , Plank or Young. I'll imagine that they were one card per caramel.
|
My Dad bought me my first pack of cards after church one sunday, a pack of 67 topps baseball. Man I'd like to have an unopened pack of 67's to open with my Dad.
|
I'd like to find in the wild a couple packs of 1975 Topps to open to remember that Summer of Rice and Lynn arguing who was better and falling in love with the Sox in more simpler times..

"An unopened 1914 Cracker Jack box..."
Yum! Crunchy! "My Dad bought me my first pack of cards after church one sunday, a pack of 67 topps baseball. Man I'd like to have an unopened pack of 67's to open with my Dad." I can't help you with the pack, but somebody has one of the wrappers for sale. "I'd like to find in the wild a couple packs of 1975 Topps to open to remember that Summer of Rice and Lynn arguing who was better and falling in love with the Sox in more simpler times.." We come from different eras, but you guys are making me think that I should stock up on junk wax. |

I literally dream about this stuff sometimes. My heart (which is with pre-war) would say a case of unopened cigarette packs that contain a T206...brand doesn't necessarily matter to me (maybe Broadleaf 460's :D).
My head would say like others, 1952 Topps High Number. I would sell the hell out of them to fund my pre-war obsession and get a little place up in Door Co. WI to get away from it all. I'd keep one of each (unopened) just to have. Fun topic! Bill |

A box of 86-87 Fleer basketball just like I used to pass by at Kroger's every week as a 12 yr old
|
Not the most impressive, but a box of 1967 Topps 7th series. Looked all over as a kid and could never find them. It would be fun opening a few packs or a box for nostalgia's sake. Agree the obvious would be fun too, t206, 33 Goudey, 52 Topps Highs.

1988 Donruss. I can only dream...

I'd opt for a box of Diamond Stars or Delongs. |
Oh, wait. Was this supposed to be a good dream??

Jake Beckley's full uniform, glove and bat from his years with the Cardinals. And a autographed baseball also from the period.
|
I would be all in on a box of E90s, assuming that's how they were distributed. I'm sure it would be rotten to the core.

1959 Topps for me
After reading about the unopened 1948 Bowman Baseball packs and the other unopened material in that "find", I had a vivid dream that night about discovering a sealed unopened wax case of 1959 Topps High Number Baseball. Such a vivid dream, too!
|
A box of George C Miller.
Or maybe a box of complete orange border boxes. |
A box of 1971 Topps Greatest Moments cards would be delicious.

What's your daydream unopened "find"
No need to "daydream" for me.
Exactly, 68 years ago this month.....I spent all my weekly allowance (50 cents) and purchased ten 1952 TOPPS wax-packs. When I opened the last pack and started shuffling thru the cards, there he was.......Mickey Mantle. That was the end of my BB card collecting. I moved on to Comics, Girls, and Cars :) Truly guys, I still remember this event as if it had occurred this morning. I will never forget it. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...wrapper100.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...mmantle52t.jpg . . https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...fhermspenc.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |
1951 Bowman or 1933 Goudey would be fun
|
How about a pack of last series 1951 Bowmans? Well, it happened to me, and, yes, I pulled a beautiful Mantle rookie. Kept it for years, then made a trade blunder and it was gone forever. Seventy years later, that one still hurts.
|
"box"/case
of 1959 Bazooka bubble gum boxes incuding the short print boxes. Mmmmm, can practically smell the gum.
That's an AWESOME story Ted! |
Ted - is that THE ACTUAL mantle you pulled from the pack? And - is that also the actual wrapper too?
|
I'd love to find an unopened case of 1956 Topps Buttons or 1964 Topps with the coin inserts (two for the price of one).
|
An unopened box of Home Run Kisses would be pretty epic.

For me, single pack would probably be a pack of old judge cigarettes with a guaranteed card inside. It would just be so amazing as so many of these other posts have been. As far as the box goes, 52 Topps hi numbers I would open two packs on a live stream video. Then of course I would put about 10 packs in a safe deposit box and the rest I would auction off one at a time at a good auction house and even one on net 54!!!!It would be incredible and of course all the packs would be PSA authenticated. We can only dream and big thumbs up to the original poster of this thread I love it. I would even love a 52 Topps wrapper but unfortunately financial means and unemployment make that probably never possible, but you never know, right? |
15 years ago I was really into the 1938 Goudey set. I did a ton of research on it, and I had a website where I displayed all the things I'd learned, about the wrappers, the two different sheets, and speculation as to why the cards were repeated twice, based on discussions I'd had with a Goudey family historian.
One day out of the blue, I got an email from someone who's grandparents owned a candy store. The way I remember it, he had 20 unopened packs of 1938 Goudey. He hadn't known what they were, and stumbled onto my website while he was trying to figure out what he had. Since I had the wrappers on my site, he emailed me. I nearly lost my mind. We emailed back and forth a few times, I was hoping to steer him towards REA for the consignment (LOTG didn't exist yet, my company was designing the REA catalog each year and I have a good relationship with Rob), and was hoping to be able to buy just one of the packs myself. Ultimately, he made a comment about the cards inside being "mint." I told him that the packs were much more valuable than the cards inside, and he disappeared! I don't think there was any reason for him to lie, so I suspect that either A) he wanted to know if there was any value in what he had, and once he realized there was, he put them away for another time, or B) he opened the packs himself. After I started LOTG I tried emailing him a number of times, with no response. C'est La Vie, I guess. But wow, would I love a find of unopened '38 Goudey. -Al |
1952 TOPPS cards
Quote:
Eric These 5 cards which I have displayed in Post #36 are my original 1952 TOPPS which were in a 5-cent waxpack that I acquired 68 years ago this month. It was the very last pack of 1952 TOPPS cards I purchased.....and, that's probably why I remember it so well. I purchased the wrapper in 1981 at the Willow Grove Show here in Pennsylvania. I need 29 mid-series Gray backs to complete my 1952 TOPPS master set (approx. 555 cards). Quote:
