Gene Bailey: Released by both Boston teams in 1920
4 Attachment(s)
I thought people would think it was fun to see a bit of history from Gene Bailey. He was released by both Boston teams in a single year, 1920.
Baseball Reference shows that he was sold by the Braves to the Red Sox on July 4, 1920: https://www.baseball-reference.com/p...ailege01.shtml What is interesting is that his release from the Braves is dated June 9, 1920. If BR is right, that means he was released and then sold about a month later, something I didn't know was possible. Also below are his 1924 RPPC team photo of the Brooklyn Robbins (mis-labled as 1920 Red Sox). If you ever wondered what the moments before the official serious team photo look like, here is your answer. Guys clowning around, someone tossing a ball in the air. You will also notice they have a dog in the middle with a pipe in his mouth. :D Wilbert Robinson is in the white shirt, Zach Wheat is to the right of him. Also a single photo of Bailey with Charlie Hargaves in 1924. |
Good stuff!!

Wow that's neat! Where did those release papers turn up?

Thanks guys. They are from Gene's grandson.

The 1920 Red Sox had quite a few players with previous or future World Series wins, including Stuffy McInnis, Waite Hoyt and Herb Pennock.
