Cardboard Gold Card Saver 1 and 2's?

Is it me or are these selling for 3-4 times more then they were just a few months ago? What's the hell is going on?

Could have made a killing on these in lieu of actual "Gold", had I known any better.

Jcfowler6 08-28-2020 01:10 PM

I’ve heard there is a shortage and have seen card savor prices going up.

Market’s on fire = grading’s on fire = grading submission materials are on fire. A rising tide....

CS1's

I purchased a box from Amazon in March for $22.99. Amazon was sold out during April, May, and much of June. I bought another box from them 2 weeks ago, same product and brand, for $44.99, which is by far the best price I have seen in quite a while.

Thanks. Just checked. In the only listing on Amazon I could find, they want more then that for half a box now, and out of stock until September 7th.

Supply chain issues because all of them are made in China, as well. So blame COVID for both the supply and demand pressures on this supply staple.

bobbyw8469 08-28-2020 02:19 PM

I have been selling box of 200 on Ebay for $80.

T_Hamilton 08-28-2020 04:56 PM

You wonder what PSA does with all the ones they receive...:confused::confused:

It was previously thought they cut them up to get the cards out easier, but it seems that was an urban hoax. However, with the stickers they place over them, that would be hard to get off. So they probably just toss them in the trash.

Aquarian Sports Cards 08-28-2020 06:27 PM

I wish I didn't need mine. I bought a case in the early days (Pat Blandford gave me the heads up!) paid regular wholesale for the last case I could find.

Card Savers

A store owner friend told me in late February that China ceased making supplies and I needed to stock up. I bought a year's worth of Card Saver 1 & 2 cases at $129.99 and 119.99 respectively.

For months you couldn't buy them then Columbia Hobby has cases for $450. They are out of stock now and cases on EBAY are selling for $500 - $700 each.

I am thankful for the tip about China shutting manufacturing down.

My guess is they cut them up the side to easily remove the card, but that’s pure speculation.

RCMcKenzie 08-28-2020 08:42 PM

i should have bought these instead of baseball cards. Oh well.

toledo_mudhen 08-29-2020 03:33 AM

You do know that you can purchase directly from the #1 importer of these - Yes?

Cardboard Gold : https://www.cardboardgold.com/card-saver-1.html

CG states -

"Sold out until September - 7/27/20 Presale is sold out - Pricing for September load is TBA

We expect the shortages to remain through Nov/Dec. We should get caught up by then and prices will normalize. COVID-19 factory delays are up to 5 months"

So having said all of that - How hard can it be for some enterprising someone to make these in United States? Detroit - are ya listening?

rjackson44 08-29-2020 07:12 AM

Its getting nuts😳😳

Republicaninmass 08-29-2020 07:24 AM

Let me guess, semi rigid top loaders are NOT scarce. Only because I have about 500 used ones in a pile

swarmee 08-29-2020 07:38 AM

You could sell them at the top of the market right now.

You sure could. Except you HAVE to sign up for Ebay managed payments now. I refuse to do that.

D. Bergin 08-29-2020 09:29 AM

As long as we're on the subject of Card Savers, have a question for you modern collectors/dealers. I'm mostly a memorabilia and a vintage guy but I've recently started having an interest in a few modern football players.

For the shinier chrome/refractor/prizm/etc.. issues, should I be putting the cards in penny sleeves before inserting them in Card Savers, to protect the surface of the cards, or does it even matter?

swarmee 08-29-2020 09:38 AM

Yes, you should use penny sleeves.

Thanks. I was hoping you weren't going to say that, LOL?

What about just standard issue Topps and non-Chrome like card issues? Is my stack of Julio Jones Panini Score cards going to be mad at me to?

Should I just start making a habit of putting everything into penny sleeves? Sorry if this sounds like a stupid question. Never really have been a Gem MT type collector before.

swarmee 08-29-2020 10:00 AM

Paper stock cards don't really need penny sleeves, IMO.

prestigecollectibles 08-29-2020 10:01 AM

Back on April 15th I bought a case of CS1 directly from Cardboard Gold for $125. Their most recent offering was $419 a case which sold out in a day. They said that they should get a big shipment with reduced prices later this year.

swarmee 08-29-2020 10:43 AM

Wait til the bots find out...

Mike D. 08-29-2020 11:29 AM

For grading submissions, are both card saver 1 or 2 acceptable? Or only 1’s?

Both, but cs2 risk damage due to much less space in the holder to place or remove.

Excellent, thank you...and you answered my follow-up questions too! :)

bobbyw8469 08-29-2020 12:35 PM

If you MUST use CS 2's.....leave them for your tobacco cards only.

Aquarian Sports Cards 08-29-2020 12:55 PM

I agree, I use 2's for tobacco size all the time.

Maybe I am doing something wrong but it appears Top Loaders are readily available on ebay and while I have never bought them, the prices did not seem that crazy...500 of them for $82 delivered? Sure there were even better deals than that but again just looked quickly.

Mike D. 08-29-2020 03:15 PM

I was planning a potential end-of-year PSA submission....may wait for inventory to get back to normal so I don’t spend more on the holders than I did on the cards. :)

Top loaders are not Card Savers

LOL...

Republicanmass wrote he had top loaders and swarmee replied he could sell them at the top of the market, hence my comment. Aware they are not card savers.

Aquarian Sports Cards 08-29-2020 06:22 PM

Sorry missed the antecedent. Nothing to see here.

Semi-rigid toploaders go by the brand name of "card savers." So yes, if he has semi-rigids as he wrote, those are the ones everyone is chasing now.

Prices

This is completely unrelated, but I buy new running shoes every 2-3 months, and when they start to wear a little, I either toss them or use them for yard work.

On June 16th, I bought a pair of brand name shoes, nothing fancy, from a seller on eBay. I have bought from this seller in the past, and he always has large discounts. On June 16th I paid $44.71 shipped. I went to order another pair today - same seller, same size, same brand and model of shoe. All of his shoes were priced at $70. The same price increase seems to have happened on Amazon. I suppose it is because many of the shoes are made in China, so the embargo is limiting the volume of supplies coming into the U.S.
