Wow.. i wonder what the reserve is for that Mike Trout 1/1. Current bid $2.5M and Reserve Not Met.... that's $3M with juice. OMG.

Steve D 08-22-2020 11:35 PM

Well, it looks like the auction's over, and the Trout sold for $3.2M; $3.84M with the BP!!!!!!!!!!

I will be the first to say that’s total insanity and someone is going regret this big time.
Of course I would have said the same thing when the seller originally bought the card for a million, so what do I know.

When it goes for 5 million we will be saying how crazy it is.

The vast majority of all message board participants thought Vegas Dave was nuts to pay 400k.

Just a sign to me of how far the card market has come and how much big money is moving in.

Very cool.

Well, it had been sitting as a BIN on eBay for months at that time, right?

Do these guys really think it's an investment at this point, or a schlong measuring contest?

I don't recall but I can't say I would have thought it would do this.

Cards are becoming modern day art and this has now become a status symbol and when that happens there is no telling how high it will go.

Babe Ruth stuff going under 20k. And Trout 3 million. Makes sense in some alternate universe I’m sure.

According to Dr. Strange, we're in the 1. Of 14,000,605 alternate universes.

The money is well spent, i am sure the buyer will come forward and use it to promote his company. (probably lob.com again)

Vegas Dave purposely set a reserve that will break the Wagner $3M record. Now that Trout is the most expensive card ever sold. Nicely planned! I am pretty sure if Wagner-8 goes on auction now, it will be at $6M+.

chriskim 08-23-2020 08:07 AM

sorry for not doing enough research. post removed

I read where Ken Kendrick said it was insured for 12 million. I would think since this is the case it’s closer to that.

Incorrect
This is a different card, we got it in RAW, and has a lower grade and lower auto grade than one heritage sold
Heritage sold a BGS 9.5 with a 10 auto grade
This card was a BGS 8.0 with an 9 sub grade
The consignor on this card more then doubled his money After any fees
Why would you even post something like this?

notice the difference between a Gem Mint 68 Ryan rookie and an 8 ryan rookie? come on...this wasn't nice

apologize for not doing enough research. post removed. sorry. (I really thought this kind of logoman is really 1/1, who knows there are multiple 1/1 in the same series. I don't collect anything post 60s)

I think there is a combination of both ignorance and jelousy.

I find it totally interesting to read these threads and the different opinions of collectors, investors, and dealers.

There are so many cards that people do not understand and therefore make statements of I don't get how X sells for Y while W sells for Z.

Economics, supply and demand.

Fifty or sixty years ago someone saw Munson play, Clemente play (maybe closer to 65-70). Those cards at that time were worth more than the cards previous to that, even of all stars such as Babe Ruth.

Collecting is about emotion and always will be, looking at a card brings up memories, joy, and peace.

Additionally money is relative, a tech billionaire spending $4M is akin to an average man buying a few hundred or thousand dollar card. That is what you can afford, that is what they can afford. They are going to show that card to friends and appreciate it just as you, simply relative to their wealth.

I do agree a superfractor is a manufactured rarity; however, the market has always differentiated these cards and that will continue (lower supply, high demand). It is the premier card of a player. IE 58 Pancho VS. 58 Pancho Error, 74 Small Letters VS. 74 Big Letters, 82 Blackless VS. 82 Base. Those were simply accidental manufactured rarities.

Art market prices literally dwarf even the highest card “sales.”

Dpeck100 08-23-2020 09:41 AM

Obviously.

Art has sold for 450 million.

Modern day.

We need some catalyst to hype our pre-war vintage cards. May be Wagner and Ruth are actually still alive or something.

Will be having a monster vintage auction in October
I’ve been told I can promote , so expect me to be all over TV with the card...looking for good company to put in the auction too....

Congrats of your recent pick up!! The market is on fire and I know Goldin can promote and have a list of rich people in the bidder list. I still remember someone bought a Ty Cobb back somewhere else and flipped after a few months at Goldin and made $40k or something like that. It was all about Goldin Power!

HOF Auto Rookies 08-23-2020 10:21 AM

Congrats on the Trout, Ken! Can't wait to see the Wagner and what else.
