UV Protection for Slabbed Cards?
 

I've got an SGC slabbed card that I'm hoping to display on a bookshelf. Does anyone have any solutions to UV protect the slab?

Edit: Just to clarify, I'm looking for an unobtrusive option to display a single card (i.e., installing UV glass over the display would not be an option).

What was suggested in another thread was to take a high quality scan of the card and display that. Of course that was when they were putting it in a frame, so that may not work in your application.

Not sure if this helps but would you be willing to display a reprint? Very cheap option that you don't have to worry about if it gets damaged by UV. You have the personal satisfaction of owning the card, and get to display a replica of what you own without having to worry about it.

There are UV films that can be cut down to place in front of/over the holder

That could work! Does anyone have any recommended options?

I'd like to display the original, so a reprint/scan isn't really an option.

Check out PSAFRAMES.COM. The frames can be put on the wall or stand. Specially made for either PSA, SGC or Beckett.

Check amazon for UV film and UV sprays that might work.

Not saying it would work 100%, but most/all top quality automotive waxes have UV protection built in them.
The only problem is I don't know if it is just a little bit of protection or if they fully protect 100%? One would need to do some research, obviously.

I'm a big fan of Collinite 845 Insulator wax for my vehicles and I have used it for years. Up here it can only be purchased online but maybe that isn't the case in the States?

I have a couple of these displays (one smaller one and one larger one) for multiple cards.

Since PSA slabs have no stated UV protection (and my research indicates there is none), I looked into various options for displaying my graded cards (mix of PSA, BVG, BGS, and SGC, plus some one-touches). I'm happy with these with respect to UV protection (they sent me the data sheet for the UV acrylic they use) and the frames themselves are well built and not too costly for what you're getting.

There are a non-trivial amount of Chinese knock-offs on eBay and elsewhere, so be sure you're getting from their eBay store or direct from their website (mainly to ensure getting the UV protection). They also stand by their products and were super responsive in solving a minor finish/damage issue.

I have no affiliation but was very happy with the product and their customer service. Not cheap, but fairly cost effective (and my wife approved of the decor).

EDIT: I did replace the inexpensive snap closure they used with some magnetic latches. PM me if want specifics, was a quick fix.

Artglass 99 UV-Filter, blocking 99% of UV light
Artglass AR92 Water White Anti-Reflective UV Glass, blocking 92% of UV light
UV Filter Acrylic, blocking 98% of UV rays
UV Filter/Non-Glare Acrylic, blocking 92% of UV light
Neither is “better” than the other, and the quality of the framing glass depends on many more factors than the mechanism of UV filtering, such as its clarity and any anti-reflective properties. The only surefire way to protect artwork from UV light is to store it in archival photo storage boxes and display a framed copy, as even glazing that filters 99% of UV light cannot completely stop degradation.

To best protect your possessions but still display your artwork, choose a suitable UV-filter glass and rotate out the pieces you display every few months, making sure that no paintings, prints and photographs are hanging in direct sunlight.

You can also buy custom cut peices of UV glass from Michael's or other frame shops without having to send away or pay for shipping.

What ive done is buy a small cheaper non-custom frame that has enough depth for a card and then buy the small peice of glass (Michael's employee actually cut it from a scrap and gave it to me for free since it was so small).

I hung mine but it would look even better on a shelf probably.Attachment 415089
