BaseBall movies
Hey Al
I don't mean to be a "kiljoy"....but, I dismiss the validity of any BB Movie list that does not include The Stratton Story. This 1949 movie featuring Jimmy Stewart in the real life role of Chicago White Sox pitcher Monty Stratton (1934 - 1938), whose promising career was cut short by a hunting accident. It is an exceptional movie. I highly recommend it. The cast includes real BB players Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Gene Bearden, Jimmy Dykes, John Kerr, Wally Berger, "Peanuts" Lowery, Johnny Lindell, etc. Plus, there is a very interesting back-story regarding Jimmy Stewart's career regarding this movie. If you are interested....stay tuned. https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...tystratton.jpg . https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...attonStory.jpg https://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan...tystratton.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |
You are not killing my joy Ted. Maybe Dan Schlossberg's joy will crushed though. :-)
The Moonlight Graham article was interesting too |
I forgot Sandlot. Absolute top 10 baseball movie. When he kisses Wendy Peffercorn (or whatever her name is), one of the best moves ever. Love Sandlot!
|
Cobb is garbage and doesn't belong anywhere on this list. And Bull Durham is way better than an "honorable mention".
|
I disagree with that list in so many ways, I can't begin to list them all. But the snub of The Sandlot probably bugs me the most.
|
Yup ---absolutely .

The top ten list isn't bad for my taste, but I'd have 61 and Cobb instead of 42 and Money Ball on my personal top ten.

Sandlot when Ruth takes Bennys 1954 Topps hank Aaron RC

Any list that doesn't include Field of Dreams in the top 3 is automatically red flagged for me. Heck of a podium omission.
Trouble With the Curve is also a phenomenal baseball movie with a great cast. Quote:

Everybody Wants Some
Everybody Wants Some is at the very top of my baseball list. It is actually one of my top five movies of all time.
It is a story about a college team in TX and the competition on and off the field. I played in college and it hits the nail on the head in so many different ways. |
Field of Dreams has always been a huge huge movie for me, but as the years have passed the parts of the movie that I could really do without grow longer. The whole free speech school part? Like nails on a chalk board. Any scene with the brother whining. Nails on a chalk board. Even some of the James Earl Jones scenes are kind of ridiculous. But there is some true magic in the movie. Burt Lancaster alone is worth the price of admission.

The Stratton Story

Thanks for your positive response to my Post #7 regarding the Monty Stratton movie. And, thanks for posting your Monty Stratton photo and the 1938 Wirephoto. Quote:
OK I think you will find this story interesting. During WWII, Jimmy Stewart enlisted in the Army-Air Force. He flew 20 combat missions in a Squadron of B-24’s over Germany. Colonel James Stewart was the leader of this Squadron. In the AF Reserve he rose to the rank of Brigadier General. His first post-war movie was...."It’s A Wonderful Life", which was a boxoffice disappointment in 1946. And, of course has been a Christmas favorite ever since. Jimmy became disenchanted with Hollywood, and went back to his hometown in Indiana, Pennsylvania to work with his Dad at their Hardware store. In 1949, Hollywood Director Sam Wood contacted Jimmy and persuaded him to be the star in his movie, The Stratton Story. This movie was presented early in the BB season and was very successful (it grossed $4.5 Million at the boxoffice). Plus, it won an Academy Award (Best Motion Picture Story). This movie renewed Jimmy's enthusiasm to continue his Acting career again. And, what more can I say......the rest is history. TED Z T206 Reference . |

On my Top Ten List because, and only because, it was the first baseball movie I saw in a theater.
And because who wouldn't want to see Billy Loes acting. |

MikeGarcia I think what you are saying regarding the Liberty Valance movie may be very true. And, that would have been a real shame, because with Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne, and Lee Marvin, this movie is one of the best westerns. Furthermore, no Vertigo, no Rear Window, no The Spriit of St. Louis, no Winchester '73, etc., etc. The Jimmy Stewart Museum in Indiana, Pennsylvania is very informative of how Jimmy Stewart was very disappointed with Hollywood, and his acting career after he completed his Air Force tour during WWII. Fortunately, for Jimmy and us, the success of The Stratton Story movie turned that all around in 1949. TED Z T206 Reference . |
Reminds me of the Big Bang revelation that Raiders of the Lost Arc would have ended the same way even if Indiana Jones had not been in the movie at all
