Show Your International Cards!
Let's see some vintage cards from other countries.
|
Some of my favorite cards are international issues.
1949-50 Toleteros of Perucho Cepeda. He was Orlando Cepeda's father and widely seen as one of the greatest international players of all time. I am especially fond of him for his stance on the Negro Leagues. Though invited to play many times, he refused to play in America as long as they segregated their players. There probably isn't a more fitting a time to induct him into the HOF than now: https://live.staticflickr.com/794/40...b5f8a06d_w.jpg Here is another Toleteros of Francisco Coimbre. Perhaps there was no better hitter in Puerto Rico than Coimbre. Satchel Paige faced Ted Williams and a host of other immortal hitters in his time. He said none of them were tougher than Coimbre: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...4778f0c308.jpg Last is what I assume is an extremely rare Puerto Rican winter league issue. This card pre-dates Matty Alou's American career. I have no idea who issued it or the year of issue: https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...bb6fd5e0b7.jpg |

Here's another Dandridge. One of the few who might have been better at 3B than Brooks Robinson. Excelled at the plate as well in the Negro leagues, Mexican League, and Triple-A baseball after integration. Member of the MLB Hall of Fame since 1987.

Here are a few, in order:
Takehiko Bessho was a star pitcher in the early days of Japanese pro baseball. Hideo Fujimoto posted a 0.79 ERA in 1943. Hisanori Karita was a star player before the formation of Japanese pro leagues (although this card is from after baseball in Japan went pro). Lefty O'Doul, you know him. And lots more in this thread. |

I have this 1932 Bulgaria Sport card of an unknown distinguished looking German gentleman. Pasted on the back side of the cut down album page are a duo I have been led to believe are Schmeling und Babe Ruth. Evidently Ruth is the one in the athletic uniform.

Nick Altrock was a decent pitcher until he hurt his arm. He was a Washington coach and occasional player for 42 years, which is the longest with one franchise in MLB history. As illustrated by the card, he was also one of the greatest "clowns" in MLB history.

--But----The Alejandro Carrasquel card is of unknown, to me, age but I think from Venezuela and features the uncle of White Sox great Chico Carrasquel.
The others are not exactly cards but supposedly over sized stamps (Between a T206 and a Tatoo Orbit) from the United Arab Emirates. They are on card stock with no adhesive on reverse. Called Vari-Vue they each feature a then current American League star and when tilted displaying a contemporary Japanese star. I have no idea of the date of release in the UAB or how many different subjects there were. I am pushing the OP's original post but the size, the paper stock and the great distance these traveled encouraged me to "Push The Envelope". |

Does anyone have any other information on these cards? The guy I bought them from said they are from Mexico. Should I get them grade? Thanks

Hi Victor,
My guess is those two Penafiel and El Nacional cards are fake, they were sold on eBay by a seller from Mexico known to sell fakes. I’ve reported to eBay each time they list a fake but they don’t seem to care as they’re still selling their crap. Steve |

From The Great White North :........R-314 Goudey Premiums , 1937 , "Type 5 " . Wide Pens , a subset--- I knew when I sent them in for grading that the kids in Joe O's basement had a better than 50-50 chance of mis-identifying them as '36 Goudey Wides , despite what I wrote on the submission form ; but at least now they're slabbed and protected from spaghetti sauce or coffee or grandchildren or teething puppies.--....small price to pay, eh , hoser ? .. |
