Did anyone notice anything unusual in H&S last night?
Just curious if anyone noticed some unusual prices?
|
I was outbid in every lot I bid in. But thats not unusual :)

I was in a bidding war for 3 hours in extended. Is that unusual?

Lost all mine
Prices stronger than death itself |
Curious
One example
1974 set...stars are described as exmt and everyone is way off center This is a set I would have a hard time selling for 300 on here or ebay Someone paid with bp and shipping $1100 |

Kooky - this explains why I bought 200+ 1977 RC Cola cans the other day. |

This is the covid "rule"
I have seen it in multiple auctions across multiple collectible categories. Stuff as nuts as the 74 set you mention. Someone in the psychology field should do a study - rough guess too many people with tot much time on their hands and money burning a hole in their pockets?
|
I had a high bid of 725 on a lot of modern autograph insert cards that I went to bed on and woke up to see the lot went for $1200. It was worth about $900-$1000 retail (I looked up everything on ebay and worthpoint). Card prices are soaring right now.

agree there were some unusually high prices, but doesn't that happen every auction?
I was outbid on everything. I probably should have stayed in on the T205 Speaker Hassan, I think someone might have done pretty well on that one. You're welcome I didn't bump it again. |
Unusual
Yes..unusual hi prices in every auction
BUT unusual high prices on just common run of the mill sets 74 set 1100? 67 set psa 5 seaver 7 mantle rest raw exmt avg maybe $8500? Complete set of 7s. Smr 10k..that's with 5000 in grading fees Look at the other sets 60s and 70s It's just weird |
It definitely was a weird auction. For several hours we had only a few calls and then it was all out chaos in extended bidding. Usually, with the 30 minute/lot rule, we are done with the auction around 1 A.M. EST. However, bidding didn't end until around 4 A.M. EST. We have done very well with ungraded sets over the past several auctions and it appears prices were especially strong this go around. Don't know if such prices are the "new normal" or if this is due to COVID demand. Regardless, appreciate all of the bids and thankful that we made it through without any software issues as volume was very high!
James Edited to add: We have developed a loyal core of ungraded set consignors/buyers. I personally handle and write all of those sets and tend to be conservative with my grading. |
Listening to a podcast this morning and someone asked why the stock market is up where the economy is tanking. answer was people are bored, can’t gamble, and there is no where else to park money and expect any kind of return. I guess your could say the same here. (Not that returns for mid level stuff is anything special.) I’d argue 90% boredom.

Is it me, or do I just watch too much TV...
Has anybody ever wondered if some businesses selling/auctioning cards are being used to launder cash?:eek: |

Been watching "Ozark" lately? ;) |

Don't know if he was serious, but how could you launder money by winning auctions if you can't pay by cash?? |
I have an idea how but we should ask Marty and Ruth
|
you can easily pay cash at H/S have for years if your local drive in and pay cash...free shipping as well
|
The vig...is the sales tax

No, not serious (well, not totally). We all kind of know that everything isn't clean in this hobby. Sooo... Is Kosgrove gonna bury Darlene? |
