Fakes, fakes and more fakes
 

I have a buddy who collects 49ers. I stumbled upon what I thought was a fake sign. He agreed and showed me another fake. He then said he liked the Flying A sign. I told him I think that one's fake, too. I had no idea these things were so prevalent.

P.S. three different sellers.

These remind me of the Seals Stadium and other signs we've discussed before. Same wear on the metal sign.

Also, for the game with the Globetrotters, it seems unlikely that they would have made anything other than a paper/cardboard poster for that one time event.

Artificially aged signs seem quite popular these days. There's tons of fake stuff like this at swap meets and antique malls. They're easy to find cheap, so it's not surprising that some unethical sellers would seek to deceive buyers by claiming they're vintage.

Yeah, the “rust dripping from a chain” is exactly the same. I don’t think any legit sign would have hung from a crummy chain....too easy to steal.

And, great point about the Globetrotter broadside.

So, the Globetrotters seller is also selling this smaller Flying A sign. As evidence for the oldness of that sign, he posted a black and white picture of the larger round rusty sign. To make it look old?

I think the license plate topper is legit.

The round sign I’m suspicious of went for $916 plus tax plus $60 shipping.

But why post a black and white picture instead of the color one? The implication seemed to be that the picture of the round one was old.

The seller does have a number of 49ers items that look legit. Just leery of these signs.
