Duke Snider & Luke Appling 1st Career HR Scorecards / Programs

Using the coronavirus downtime to organize and refocus some of my collection. Would be willing to consider trades or offers for Red Sox memorabilia if not sold outright.

June 20, 1931 Philadelphia A’s vs Chicago White Sox - Luke Appling’s 1st Career HR

Appling wasn’t known for his power obviously. He finished with 45 career HRs in over 10k plate appearances. In fact this game was not only his first career HR, but the only one he hit all year in 1931, coming as a game-tying 2 run shot in the bottom of the 9th inning. The A’s would prevail in 10 innings, 5-4, with HOFer Ted Lyons taking the loss in relief. Rube Walberg pitched a complete game for the win.

Appling played 6 games his first season in 1930, so 1931 is considered his true “rookie” year. The White Sox were on their way to 97 losses that year.

The A’s on the other hand were steamrolling toward a franchise best 107-45 record behind HOFers Jimmie Foxx (1-4), Al Simmons (2-5, 3 RBI), Mickey Cochrane (DNP) and Manager Connie Mack. They would lose the 1931 WS in 7 games to the Cardinals.

This was also the final season for Charles Comiskey, with his photo on the front of the scorecard.

May 2, 1948 Brooklyn Dodgers vs Philadelphia Phillies - Duke Snider Hits 1st 2 HRs, Richie Ashburn 1st Career Triple

Similar to Appling, it took Duke Snider a little while to get going in his MLB career. He played 40 games with the rookie Jackie Robinson in 1947 but hit no HRs while used mostly as a pinch hitter.

He again started 1948 as a bench piece, but got a start on May 2, 1948 in the first game of a doubleheader. He went ham, crushing 2 HRs (his first 2 HRs of his career) and his 2nd career triple, on his way to a 4-5 game with 4 RBIs and 12 TBs. This would be the highlight of 1948 for him as he would soon get sent down again and would not break out as a star until 1949.

The Dodgers won 9-6, and the game also included Jackie Robinson’s 1st HR (13th career HR) and 1st Triple (6th career) of 1948. Combined, Snider, Robinson and Carl Furillo made up all of the Dodgers RBIs in the game.

Also of historic note is rookie Richie Ashburn, playing in his 13th career game. He made an effort to keep the Phillies competitive with a 3-5 game and his first career triple and 2nd career double. His 3 RBIs were career No. 2, 3 and 4.

The program is mostly unscored but notes that Robinson and Snider had 3 and 4 hits each and marks are indicated next to each of the doubleheader’s starting pitchers. The lineups match up with the roster each team had in May 1948 when they faced each other. The cover has the scores to both games of the doubleheader (a Ken Heintzelman 4 hit shutout won the Phillies 2-0).
