Sporting life Magazine question
 

I have been trying to find Sporting Life items to mat with my M116 Cubs team set and was wondering if Sporting Life had a Cubs team photo from 1910 (the team represented in the m116 set) on their cover or in a team photo issue?

Hi Sean -

Between Oct 23, 1909 and March 26, 1910 all 16 teams had a composite printed in an issue of the Sporting Life, but all of them were on inside pages except the Pirates and Tigers (the league champs). The Cubs were in the November 6, 1909.

There were no other team composites printed thru the November 2, 1911 issue. I do not have info on issues after that.

Here's the pic referenced in this thread. The cubs are on page 3. The cover subject for this issue was Charles Adams from the 1909 Pittsburgh team.

This is from the LA84 Sporting Life Magazine database, which has scanned copies of the magazine going back into the 1880s! Its an amazing resource for collectors. I have not found a comprehensive list of cover subjects / interior photos, so you have to fish around abit to find what you are looking for, but I can spend days in the database for sure!

I'm thinking that team is just a bit too old to mat with the m116 team set. I have the original cubs envelope, an ad for the cards, can anyone think of anything else that is attainable that would go well with my teamset?

I do have a list of the covers from Jan 2, 1889 thru Dec 25, 1889 and from Mar 25, 1899 thru Sep2 2, 1911 that I compiled when I owned them all.

62 of them I have noted just as "have" which I think means that those issues don't have a picture on the cover, but I'm not positive about that.
