If your cards are insured...here's another thing to consider...

Insurance is critical, of course.
In addition, in the event of my departure, my kids will inherit a nice collection. I have assembled a series of "Auction Catalog" style books that are fun to look at now and, perhaps, essential later. It occurred to me when I got sick a few years ago and this down time is a great opportunity to get my shit together. I can do these for others--just as soon as I complete my essentials and know what it will cost and entail time-wise. You can probably do it yourself, too. It's actually a fun project and the results, so far, look like a high-end Heritage Catalog. I put broad price guides and included an index with spaces to update prices based on actual sales, etc. |
Great idea, Phil! Very classy.

This is cool. I would be interested long term. Great idea

Mad
Phil, you have mad skillz with graphics!
I really admire your work! This is a timely idea. I’m going to look into such a project this weekend since there are no sports to watch. Of course this must be after I work on my honeydew list that suddenly became impossible to avoid since there are no sports to watch! |
My only issue with this is that I never feel like my collection is complete. I suppose one could update the catalog as they go along, so my near complete set of Helmar Stamps could be amended when I finally snag a relatively easy, but somehow not in my collection yet, Babe Adams.
I’m not allowed to leave this earth until a few of my pre-war set endeavors are complete! Edited to add: but holy crap, what a beautiful display and great idea! |
Really beautiful!

Phil, these look great, what software did you use to create them?

I can't tell you how much I appreciate the kind words! I definitely understand the "never finished" aspect. In fact, I added a ledger page for market updates when prices fluctuate. Also, as time goes on--I'll update with another volume each year. Once the templates are there, it won't be too bad updating. Of course, I don't add that much to my collection these days that would require a catalog, Lol. I use quite a bit of various software but it's likely with some trial and error a good calendar maker could work. I wouldn't spend too much on software. More expensive generally means more complicated and less intuitive. I have a lot of the software as I use it for creating Banty Red collections. It's been obtained over a period of 10 years so I never really "felt" the cost. |
Here's a couple more...

Here's a couple more...I'm trying to leave notes for my kids. Like in the notes on the 52 Dodgers Team Set "never discount a 52 Dodger in high grade. If the price is too high--so be it. Unless you need blood or shelter...keep it." Lol

what a gr8 idea!
LOVE, LOVE, LOVE!!!! such a great idea! and you're graphics and verbiage are so "Heritage" like!

Very nice, Phil.!!
I am also going through some of my cards and re-scanning the ones I didn't do a very good job on the first time. While I am doing that I am also making small notes and placing them between the sleeve and the top loader letting my son and/or my wife know the value/rarity of my higher end cards in case something were to ever happen to me. I like your idea much better but with my lack of computer skills, my way will have to do for now. Thanks for sharing. :) |

I have an absurd collection of negatives that include original Conlon, Burke and Brace and regional photographers from 1940-1980...too many to count, really. I'm ashamed of what I've spent but my kids can enjoy their modest fruit. How on Earth can I mark all of 'em? One day at a time, I spose. Good luck to you!!! |

I thought the answer was going to be "fortunate fire" but glad I was wrong.

I'm slowly but surely getting things done re-correcting my scans. More of a daunting task than I anticipated as many of my cards, despite repeated taps on my desk trying to get the card straight in my top loaders, still doesn't work at times. Most of my cards are also in sleeves and with not all things being perfect with sleeves and top loaders, as far as squareness goes, things are proving to be somewhat difficult. I will, most likely, after I am finished, wipe/edit my FlickR account and start all over re-posting the new, much better scans. Still loving your setup and I'm really enjoying the cards you've posted so far. Those are very nice! :) |
