Net54 Contest: Post a Gibson, win a Gibson
Hey everyone, I'd like to announce a contest!
Marty and I met on this board a few years ago, and ended up conversing back and forth quite a bit about our George Gibson collections, and Canadian baseball in general. In May of 2016, Marty wondered aloud if there was enough content out there to write a book about Gibson. Fast forward to this past Friday, and we are now in possession of the first copies of George “Mooney” Gibson: Canadian Catcher for the Deadball Era Pirates. In many ways, this board is where it all began, so with Leon’s permission (thanks Leon!), we’d like to run a contest. The rules are simple:
We will announce the winner here on the board, and the winner will receive a copy of our book completely free! Thank you to all who enter, and good luck! That's really cool that you two wrote a book about Gibson! Here's my favorite:

I had to dig a bit to find an entry, since I don't have many cards, and either of his two m101-2 issues seemed too easy.
So, here is a scored program for George's 40th career game. He went 0-3, in a losing effort for the Pirates vs the Brooklyn Superbas... Doug PS - did anybody notice that I used to, two and too in one sentence? |
Cool to see a nice range of Gibson cards here, but also the Thompson photo of Gibson's hands and even a score card. And for the record, I didn't notice your use of to/too/two, Doug.
Thanks for all the posts and supportive messages so far! Richard. |

So if you have anything related to any of teams that Gibson played on, feel free to post that. If you still don't have anything, feel free to check out my Gibson collection (link in my signature), and just post your favourite Gibson card from there. Good luck! Richard. |

This is my favorite - this photo isn't mine, as I sold mine before I moved to Israel last year.

Gees! You guys aren't messing around with the Gibson cards.
Two Rose PCs, a W600, that sweet cabinet (Chris, do you think that photo is actually the basis of Gibson's T206???), and even a copy of the book! Unreal. Sincerely guys, I appreciate all the posts. This is so awesome! |
Here’s another Gibby you don’t see too often:

I don’t have much of anything pre WW1 but I can show off this September 7, 1910 Pirates-Cardinals doubleheader program I have. The cover is shot to heck but the inside is still pretty nice including a roster sheet and photos of Gibson and all the Pirates stars. The Wagner headshot is the same as was used in his T206 card!

A Voskamp! My favourite of all Gibson cards. Strong way to close out the entries.
Just so it's noted, the contest is now closed. No more entries are allowed. I am going to conduct the draw right now... |
Okay, so after entering all the names into random.org, and randomizing the list 28 times -- once for each name on the list, the winner is ...
Randy Lantz -- username RL! <img src="https://www.richardarmstrong.ca/book_draw_results.gif" /> Congratulations Randy! PM me your address, and we'll get your copy of the book into the mail ASAP. Thank you to everyone who entered, and to Leon for letting us hold this draw! Shameless plug for anyone looking to buy this, or any other baseball book by McFarland (https://mcfarlandbooks.com/). Owing to the delay of the start of the Major League season, from March 23rd to April 5th, McFarland will be promoting a coupon code that's good for 40% off of any baseball book they sell. That code is POSTPONED40 Thank you again, to everyone for playing along! Richard & Marty. |
I knew I should have randomly posted a T205 Gibson! Congrats Randy on being the winner.

thank you very much....
looking forward to reading the book |
Thanks Richard for the contest and the coupon code. I just ordered my book.

I have to ask, of course, because of your last name. Any relation? Richard. |
I started collecting him because of his last name so it gave me someone to collect in that era. Although I have many George Gibsons in my family tree none are from Canada. As a side note when I met Bob Gibson a few years ago he joked maybe we are related. 😊
|
Thanks Richard!
Just ordered the book as well.
Thanks for the coupon code and best of luck in your book sales gentleman! Patrick |
