Photo ID help requested for Henry Chadwick Image

2 Attachment(s)
This image came directly from the Chadwick family. Henry Chadwick is seated in the back row, second from left. That is all I know about the image. Inasmuch as the family saved it, and it appears to denote a significant occasion, I've always wondered who the other people might be. I surmise it was taken around 1904, perhaps on the occasion of Chadwick's 80th birthday.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Great image

Corey,
I love the group image. I am away from some of my research books right now, but I would check the images of other sports writers in Athletic Sports and Spink’s National Game, first. I think it very likely they are sportswriters as it looks like it could be a field with the fence in the background, they seen to have programs of some sort of writing material, and a carriage would make sense for a special event of some sort. I can’t read the writing at the bottom, can you make it out? Also, I have seen reference to the fact that the Brooklyn photographer, Pearsall, was a friend and took Chadwick’s portrait every year on his birthday. Pearsall May be in the photo, or may have taken it.
Right now I can’t think of any other books that have lots of images of other sportswriters, but I will check when I can.

Corey-If you look look to the right at the background doesn’t it look like they are in a stadium? Could the driver be Mills and the image be related to the Mills Commission?

bgar3 03-07-2020 05:56 PM

Jay, agree they look like it is a stadium or ball field, but would expect to see George Wright and Reach, if it was the Mills commission, and I do not see them.
I will get a Chance next week to check out the sportswriter idea.

I agree deciphering the writing at the bottom would be very helpful. It reads,

"To Henry Chadwick, Compliments [NAME I CANNOT MAKE OUT]"

Here is a closeup of that name.

Could be "Edward"?

The building in back looks like the building at Washington Park in Brooklyn. He attended the 1908 Opening Day there.

Looks like Harry Pulliam first person bottom left

Very interesting! It does resemble Harry Pulliam. If this image is Opening Day 1908, that might explain why the family saved it, as that was the year Chadwick died. To go further, it is reported that Chadwick died shortly thereafter from pneumonia he contracted covering Opening Day. So if in fact that is the occasion for this image, this might be Chadwick's final (baseball) photo.

If 1908, even more interesting. Will check for other sports writers this week.

I did what I could with the brightness and contrast in photoshop, in case this helps...

Here is a colorful Cigar box label (circa 1905 - 1909) of Harry Pulliam in his "dapper duds".….. if that helps any.

Could it be Charles Ebbetts standing in the bottom row (2nd from the right in white hat) ???

Brooklyn's opponent Opening Day 1908 was Boston, owed by George and John Dovey. Here are images of Charles Ebbetts, George Dovey and John Dovey.

I looked at those three also, Corey. I don't think there's anything definitive. The two short guys in the front row sure look similar enough to be related.
The heavy guy top row left looks very familiar, too.

Checked Athletic Sports and Spink sportswriter section without anything jumping out. Sorry.

Corey

Edward J. McKeever and Stephen McKeever (half owners with Charles Ebbets of the Brooklyn Superbas….circa 1908) are pictured in this photo.
I believe Edward McKeever is the gentleman on the bottom right (2nd from end) and to his left is his brother Stephen.

Thanks Ted. If that is correct, I think it is a good bet the image is of Opening Day 1908 at Brooklyn. I think the Ebbets ID looks good, as does the Pulliam. It makes sense Chadwick would be there, as well offers a good explanation why the photo remained in the family's possession.

Thank you too everybody else who commented. I have had this image for some time, and had often wondered what it depicted. The people on this forum are incredibly knowledgeable and very generous in sharing their knowledge. :)

Besides Henry Chadwick, that Currier & Ives image depicts James Creighton as the pitcher.
