Eight Men Out: buncha poppycock?
 

Hey guys, what do you think of this film? Is it generally regarded by baseball guys as Hollywood Fluff?

My all time favorite baseball film.
I am a 1919 Series collector and I absolutely love it.

The film is visually appealing, but it is based on the Eliot Asinof book of the same name that has been largely debunked by SABR. You can read a summary of their major findings here: https://sabr.org/eight-myths-out

Also, I recommend the book...." RED LEGS and BLACK SOX "......written by Edd Roush's Grandaughter, Susan Dellinger (Copyright 2006).

I met her in Cooperstown in 2006, and we talked for quite a while. At the end of our conversation she gave me an autographed copy of her book.

Susan's story is based on her 1st-hand knowledge of conversations and memorabilia from her HOFer Grandfather Edd and her Grandmother, Essie Mae Roush.

Her main contention is that Cincinnati unequivocally won the 1919 World Series.

Eight Men Out
 

The Eight Men Out movie is a classic. I don't think it is factually correct, but it is fun to watch. I really felt like I went back in time to 1919. You can picture yourself in a room with Joe Jackson, Cicotte or Gandil while watching this movie. What would you do in those situations? The sets and costumes are amazing. I can't think of a better baseball movie from that era.

I love Eight Men Out. Not that I would know exactly what to look for but I think the scenes of the old ballparks in that film are really cool and provide, to me a realistic view into a deadball era game.

A little off topic but there is a scene in Field of Dreams where Archie 'Moonlight' Graham says... 'there's Gil Hodges!' maybe its nitpicky of me but that line always makes me cringe. Eight Men Out may not be factually accurate across the board but there is nothing in that movie that makes me shake my head like the Hodges line in FOD.

I like how when the inning was over the fielders would just leave their gloves out there.

In order to make the game action look authentic, the producers brought in instructors to show the actors how do it right. Charlie Sheen said, "We could do everything the guys from MLB could do, only we were doing it in slow motion." I love that.

Turning the black sox white is a good book to check out

Tim Hornbaker, the author, is a friend of mine. I truly believe he is the best baseball author going right now. This book, his Cobb bio, and his Shoeless Joe bio are all absolutely top-shelf.
