Who is this 1915-24 Cincinnati Reds player?

I tried, and failed, to ID this guy. Who is this?
Thanks in advance. |
On first glance I was thinking Eppa Rixey, but that wouldn't be correct because Rixey threw left handed. What does the back of the photograph say?
|
How about Jimmy Ring?

Photo was initially labeled as Ray Fisher. Someone later amended the description. I am leaning toward "not Fisher".

I'm leaning against Jimmy Ring, although he does have a long face, so it's possible. But here is a side profile of Ring, and it's just not the same. How about Dolf Luque?
Regardless, The face is long, so we can rule out many people with rounder faces. I can tell you who it's not: Edd Roush Ray Fisher Slim Sallee Heinie Groh Dutch Ruether |
Larry Kopf?

Thank you for your replies.
|
Pretty sure it’s not Dolf - he had a more sharp featured face
|
Maybe Roy Mitchell....
|
I think Larry Kopf or Roy Mitchell are both good guesses. Kopf's ears sit higher than Mitchell's, and if i had to choose, i think the unidentified picture has ears that sit lower, more like Mitchells. But I still think Luque is as close a choice as Mitchell. The picture is Dolf Luque.

Tim, thanks for posting the pics for comparison. It helped. I looked through the Getty Images site and I did not find anything definitive...yet. I am going to keep looking, but I am now (maybe) leaning toward Roy Mitchell. I remain open to suggestions.
I wish Conlon, whoever that was, would have been more careful in ID’ing his subjects. |

I think it may be Roy Mitchell. See him circled in red on the two team photos attached.
Since I was already looking for a player, I had to find Shoeless Joe of course. He is in the stands. I circled him in blue. It has to be Joe because he is in every b/w photo ever taken. Ok, there is a very slight chance it may not be Joe. :) |

I dont think it's Roy Mitchell, Mitchell's nose is much more pronounced than guy in this photo
Possible George Lowe (1920 Reds)? Possibly Rube Bressler, Luque or Rixey...I think Rixey is the best guess of these imo |

Still don't think it could be Rixey cuz he throws left handed

Luque
Looks like Luque to me.

Im thinking it could be Ray Fisher and it was correctly labeled. Here is a picture of Fisher with Dickie Kerr during the 1919 WS

I agree. No way it's Rixey, and think it is most likely Fisher.
|
I was convinced it was Mitchell. Of course, now I think it looks like Fisher. I had previously looked at the shot with Kerr and it didn’t jump out at me that the player in my photo was definitively Fisher. Maybe he wrote the correct name in the back after all? If someone had not written “not Fisher”, then I would not have doubted it.
