Signed ball Ruth/Gehrig authenticity
 

Hi all,

This is outside my already limited expertise, any opinions on whether this is authentic/unaltered etc etc...

This was bought as a potential Sing Sing prison museum piece but I have my concerns about the signatures and writings. I believe it was actually authenticated since the auction, I am trying to find out by whom at this point and if that is actually the case.

Anyway, curious if people have any thoughts one way or the other, maybe it is legit all around, I just have no experience with these autos and balls.

Sing sing museum? I don't get the connection?

I'm guessing the Sing Sing Museum wants it because it is supposedly from a 1929 game between the Yanks and the Mutual Welfare League, which was the group that sponsored prison athletics. There was an internal league and a "varsity" team called the "Black Sheep" that played a whole range of outside teams. The Yankees, Giants and several other big league teams played exhibition games against the convicts over the years, and one of the Sing Sing players, Alabama Pitts, was signed out of the prison to play for Albany in the International League in 1934.

Pitts may have even played against Babe and company that day since he was sent to Sing Sing in '29. If I recall correctly, it was a game against the Yankees that first got Pitts noticed, but I would guess it was a few years later. He was supposedly a better football player and played in a few games for the Philadelphia Eagles.

If it's a real ball, this is a pretty cool piece of baseball history that most people don't know about.

The "B" in Babe looks bad to me....

In my opinion it is a fake

The Gehrig looks traced, if nothing else. Also, it looks like it was heavily used after all those signatures were written. If that provenance story is accurate, one would think the ball would've been better cared for than to let kids (or the family dog) play with it.

Not an autograph collector, just my 2 cents.

Does a PSA authentication mean anything anymore with items like this?

I had my doubts, but again have limited knowledge of autographs, balls, etc...once the PSA stamp of approval is given, not sure I can advise them otherwise without anything definitive.
