Does Rose Have A Valid Point?

Rose is asking for reinstatement based on the fact that cheaters are no longer receiving lifetime bans. Does he have a valid point?

I think the Astros players got off too easy but I put gambling on baseball and sign stealing as 2 completely different things.

orioles93 02-05-2020 06:26 PM

Yes he has a valid point. Sign stealing with technology to cheat in game is way worse than gambling on a game. In this case the players themselves were cheating and directly affected the outcome of the games. Rose may have managed a little different on games he gambled on, but he was not playing and directly changing the game. Either Rose's ban should be lifted or the Astros players should be severely punished to match Rose.

I wouldn't even ask to be put in the HOF if I were him. This guy gets discussed every year the HOF talks come up. People already treat him as a HOF'er so why bother. He is talked about every year, pretty much more popular than most that are in the HOF. Enjoy the attention.

100% he has a valid point.

chaddurbin 02-05-2020 08:27 PM

he agreed to the lifetime ban, he has no leg to stand on.

Agree 100%

He's not banned for cheating. He's got no case. He is his own worst enemy, aside from the gambling the years and years and years of lying sealed his doom.

Great player regardless but he doesn't have a prayer of going in IMO. Just go away.

Even if Rose is ever reinstated, he would have to be voted in. I doubt he could ever get 75%.

Cheating vs gambling? Hmmm...

Gambling and fixing games is the golden rule you just don't break. Buy a ticket to come in, Pete.

Rose has a valid point, but I don't agree with it.

Betting's rule and punishment was explicit, and he agreed to the punishment. I also assume he is still lying.

Though, in agreement with him sort of, I think the Astro's punishment wasn't harsh enough. I'm one for voiding the World Series win, and punishing the players . . . However, punishment for all the Astros is the win will always be tainted, and they can't ever say the won the WS without people bringing up the cheating.

And it may not be a lifetime ban for the coaches and GM, but I don't think they're finding work any time soon. The players involved may find baseball's doors closed after retirement as well. Just ask Beltran.

As for Rose being in the HOF. I'm ok with him going in as a player, but his lifetime ban from baseball should stay in effect for gambling as a manager. JMO

Hank Aaron's thoughts: Astros should join Rose, not other way around.

Absolutely. Permanently suspend all of the players who were involved and ban them from any future entrance into the HOF.

So some forms of cheating are worthy of a ban but others are not?

The players were given immunity if they talked. Without the players testimony, MLB probably doesn't have enough evidence to really punish the players anyway. Besides that, the Players Union would never allow it.

No, if you get caught cheating, you should be out.

packs 02-07-2020 12:52 PM

Cheating and breaking the rules are different things. I could see how some PED-loser could argue they broke the rules and didn't cheat, but these guys cheated. It can only be called cheating. They should be tossed from the league like anyone already banned. If you're on video hitting a garbage can, you are banned. If you were at bat on more than one occasion and someone was banging a trashcan to signal pitches for you, you are banned.

drcy 02-07-2020 01:03 PM

I'm a hardass about rules-- and have stated that the WS win should be vacated--, but don't think they players should be permanently banned for this particular sign stealing.

But I'm a fan of Hank Aaron and am glad that someone of his stature said what he said.

Yes, he broke the rules and got away with it. That doesn't make it right.

Nice to see that Henry Aaron agrees with me.

Here is a portion of a comment I made on January 25 in the "Astros sign stealing suspensions" thread :
https://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=278107

According to the commissioner of baseball, "virtually all of the Astros’ players had some involvement or knowledge of the scheme"

Here is the list, 25 names to be written next to Shoeless Joe and Eddie Cicotte :

Juan Centeno
Evan Gattis
Brian McCann
Jose Altuve
Alex Bregman
Carlos Correa
Marwin Gonzalez
Yuli Gurriel
Carlos Beltran
Derek Fisher
Cameron Maybin
Josh Reddick
George Springer
Dallas Keuchel
Francisco Liriano
Chris Devenski
Ken Giles
Luke Gregerson
Will Harris
Lance McCullers, Jr.
Collin McHugh
Charlie Morton
Joe Musgrove
Brad Peacock
Justin Verlander

Fuck all of them.
