There are many "Cards That Never Were" in various mediums out there.
What are some of your favorites and what cards would you like to see?
A '52 Ted Williams or '52-'57 Topps Musial would have been nice...or how about a base set 1960 Yaz?
Interested to know yours...and see if I can oblige, Lol

What does the back look like?

1952 Topps Ralph Kiner. He was right there with Williams and Musial missing, all top 5 players in MLB. Topps had him in 1951 and 1953, so why is he missing?

Here is a sheet from our 52 series. This particular sheet contains quite a few omissions from Topps offering--including Kiner (bottom row).

I like the Ford, Furillo and super rare image of Gene Mauch with the Yankees.

I worked on these over the weekend in the wee hours. Very happy with them. I couldn't find any images in my collection or anywhere on the internet with Shibe Park backgrounds (as most '55 Bowman had) but went with best alternatives that were in the spirit of the photography. Of course, the images have to be in the time period, which was easy for Robinson...not so easy for Koufax, Lol

1951 Bowman high number Chuck Connors.

How about any Bowman Hal Newhouser. He could have been in all of the sets, but he is in none.

All I ever want, cards for guys on teams that we never got cards for. Minor league counts too!

While we don't have a Chuck Connors (yet) from '51, he IS in our '52 set!

The fronts are easy if you have photoshop. It's the backs that take forever! That's why Bob Lemke's cards were so cool - you can tell the time and effort he spent creating the backs.

I'm not sure you have a grasp on what I do--or if you were even responding to me. :o I can assure you...the fronts are not easy to do well. Original art takes time, skill, patience and a sense of humor. Although I do not specialize in existing card designs, the ones I make have different custom reverses to help identify and differentiate from their origins.
Bob Lemke's cards are, indeed, "so cool". No doubt about that. And, yes...some backs take FOREVER. For me, it's easier to create something that already existed for sure. Cartooning, stock and font match are keys to producing cards that never were. The Kaline is exceptional. The Gehrig and Ruth have varying degrees of clarity and super-imposition and don't have the Deco-Gothic font used on the original issue. Finally, the 1939 sleeve patch is a 1935-36 no-no. Fronts are not easy.
It's hard to strike a balance between the production limitations of 1935 and an attractive card--while maintaining the "feel" of an authentic vintage item.
I'll see if I have any sample backs to share.

Card and Reverses
 

Here are some sample cards/reverses...care is take to use era-appropriate logos (NHL, etc) and Autographs (Aaron & Post). It's the details that are cool!

You certainly do fine work, Phil. They're beautiful; the 1954 Bowman Hank Aaron really captured my eye.

I sure had a lot of fun doing a few fantasy cards in conjunction with my book on immediate post-war regional / food issues, NEVER CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN. With the help of an artist-photographer-computer graphic artist, I made two different versions of 1954 Wilson Franks Mickey Mantle and Jackie Robinson. Owning a genuine Wilson Roy Campanella made it easier to do. It's been almost ten years ago now, but I remember the project well.:D

What do you imagine? Would it be a staged "action" shot or a poignant portrait?

I'm thinking it would have looked a lot like the 34 Goudey, the one where he's got that big smile on his face. Something like this:

Thank you! Actually, I am a baseball scout and player development specialist--career wise. I am also a graphic artist. It keeps me sane, Lol.

I have NO idea why my pictures sometimes are tiny and other times come out just fine. Tonight, they're tiny, I guess...
