Brooks Robinson Favorite Card Poll

With the Brooks Robinson thread going Mark and I thought it would be neat to find out what everyone thinks is their favorite regular issue card of Brooks. I’m going to do this poll in 4 parts. The first poll will consist of years 1957-1963. The next group will be from 1964-1970 . The third will consist of 1971-1978. The final poll we will take the top three vote getters and pit them against each other for the final champion card. I’ll do a poll for each quarter of the year with the winning card decided on the New Year.

So let’s get to it.

Bigdaddy 01-22-2020 04:14 PM

Not Topps best efforts here. The 1958 card is a dead-ringer for Gomer Pyle.

I guess the youthful Brooks with a full career ahead of him in his 1957 portrait gets my vote. There are (much) better options in the later groups

Instead of going through all of that rigamarole, why don't you just ask people to explain what their favorite Brooksie card is? For me, the 1976 Topps is a cooly bizarre looking thing. He's smiling nicely, but it gives the illusion that (because the shadow is blocking his eyes) he is kinda lost in the sun...when he's probably reacting to or chatting with someone during warm-ups. Certainly not the usual type of shot you'd see on cards. Love it!

Just pick one out of the group Darren :D When the '76 Topps poll comes up YOU pick that one

You're gonna be an O's fan sooner or later...

jgannon 01-22-2020 06:12 PM

Hey everybody! I'll go with the 1969 Topps, if I had to pick a favorite!

ksfarmboy 01-22-2020 06:32 PM

I went through this “rigamarole” because I like to discuss baseball, cards and memorabilia. This gives everyone a chance to eventually talk about their favorite card plus two more chances to discuss other cards they may like and even some they dislike. Brooks is my favorite player so the more the better with me. It’s not all about the poll that’s just a conversation starter.

My pick from this group is the 1960 Topps. It’s not my favorite card of his but I like the design, colors and the double picture. The 1959 would be a close 2nd followed by the 1957.

commishbob 01-22-2020 08:04 PM

I voted '61 but I could have gone with any of the other except for the unfortunate '58. ;)

I like the way the Orioles sleeve patch is front and center. Always been a favorite of mine.

commishbob 01-22-2020 08:07 PM

And, FWIW, the '63 Fleer would rank above some of these on my list.

I like the design more than the picture.

Ha ha, okay. No offense intended, if it was taken that way. I will have to abstain, because that grouping of cards is really as boring as it gets.

G1911 01-22-2020 10:27 PM

Anything but the 1958 Topps, that card is horrendously ugly.

Ha! I thought you had taste in baseball cards? How can anyone not like some of these cards in this grouping. Hey; send me that Brooksie rookie you have since it's "boring". Also, any and all of the other boring cards I'll take off of your hands as well. ;)

Mark70Z 01-23-2020 02:25 AM

Clint,

In my view this is a tough grouping. You have his rookie card, which is iconic, but all of them look good with likely the exception on the 1958 card. The card setup is nice on '58, but the picture Topps chose was less than desirable. Have you seen the '58 original artwork? At least if that whole shot was used it would have been a lot better even though it's not the best image of Brooks.

I went with 1960 since it's just a nice setup with two pictures of Brooks. It was tough and on a different day I may have chose differently...

Jcfowler6 01-23-2020 04:20 AM

Always thought he looked like a young George Bush on the 1957.

I guess we're sticking to register issue cards. Otherwise I might pick this one

ksfarmboy 01-23-2020 08:13 AM

Darren you still get a vote so pick the lesser of the evils😁.

Bob and anyone else that wants to vote for the fleer cards or post cereal cards just say it’s you favorite and I can tabulate them in later. They are in my mind standard issue but I didn’t and should have included in my poll. We will probably do an all star one as well. I like the 61 all star too.

commishbob 01-23-2020 08:38 AM

Clint, you can do a separate one for the All-Star and 'oddball'/alt issues like Post, Fleer, inserts like the '64 Stand up.

ksfarmboy 01-23-2020 10:16 AM

Bob we can do that. I can shorten the times frame on the next couple polls and do the all star and odd ball cards. Would like some input on what issues you guys would like to see. All stars for sure, supers, stand up, Giants, transograms.

Ron that’s a great card and one I haven’t picked up yet.

You know what's pretty bizarre? For such a world class fielding superstar, virtually all of the mainstream Brooksie cards (save for 'only' 1973 and 1976, I believe) feature either a headshot or him in a batting pose. Where are the staged fielding poses?? Strange days, indeed.

In the future, you might save everyone some time and post images of the cards too. I'm sure not everyone has every Topps card memorized. I can generally imagine many of the star cards, but sometimes forget what one looked like.

The 60s generally didn't have anything memorable for me with regard to photos. Most of the time it comes down to the set design and hope it was not one of those hatless giant head shots! I am a fan of those tiny, who's card is it action photos that became so common in the 1971 set and continued for most of the decade.

I will choose 1961 for the simple clean design and a nice batting pose.

Would be nice to see two additional polls (not sure if that is what you meant). One would be regular issue Topps cards, just not his main card. Things like the 61 AS, 71 World Series, Leaders, etc. The other could be for the non-regular cards by Topps and others like the '64 Giants, Fleer, pop-ups, etc.

Thanks for the pics as I think the only one I have is the 61. Weirdly I am not a fan of 57 Topps but really like that one. I would definitely vote the 58 as the worst looking one.

Ben,

You definitely wouldn't be in minority with the '58. I like the setup on the '58 just not the pose of Brooks that Topps chose.

I am guessing this is a fantasy/custom. Can you post a pic of the back? Also could you tell me about the green label PSA flip, is it just a way to get custom cards slabbed? Thanks:)

Phil,

Post that thing in the Brooks and Baltimore Oriole thread!

Sure. The reverse of that particular card is below. It has since been changed to the reverse that is used in our "Lost" series as the "On Deck" series is retired.

The green label, like many PSA offerings, is inconsistently applied. For a few years they have holdered dozens of my custom cards. You can see some of them in the immediate sale section of the BantyRed.com website.

A woman named Veronica Lopez (a stellar and knowledgeable collector, to be sure ) took over and said my cards were "Too Real" for the green flip holders--even after adding production date and "art card".
Meanwhile, if I send them back in a month, they'll likely holder them again.
The question is...why have the green holder at all if not for an art card or the like???

Buyers of my cards typically send them in here and there with positive results.
A plan is in place coming soon for art cards that will add to their collectibility...I'm working tirelessly on it every day.

I love the 58 Topps. I like the blue background and the logo, I know the image is silly, but that's part of the charm for me. I've never been a fan of the 57. I just think the 57 is a terrible looking baseball card. And I know I'm in the minority there.

I think that anyone who picked the '58 deserves to have their posting privileges revoked. Unless your last name is 'Pyle'.

;)

Thanks to everyone that has participated. I’m going to close the vote this weekend so if you haven’t voted yet here’s your chance. The second phase of the poll 1964-1970 will start next week.
