Looks like the sketch is based on this photo which is on eBay at the moment.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Car...-/163212444202 If the listing ends here is the photo: Attachment 382477 Credit to member Mark Hoyle for digging this one up. There is nothing else to be found through his contacts so far. |
That was definitely the source ! Need to find a Yaz guy to tell me more about it ! Thanks
|
I am unfamiliar, but
can it be dated based on the hat and what you can see of the uniform?
|
I am think 1975 to 1978 but I am not a expert on Red Sox uniforms
|
Any idea who the artist is? I can’t blow up the image to see the signature above his shoulder closer.

This looked better on my phone, but I still can't tell.
|
A lot of gas stations in the 70’s and 80’s gave those type of drawings away. In central Illinois Bears , Cubs and football Cardinals were all available
|
I can’t make out the artist name on the original.

I’m a “Yaz guy” but I can’t pinpoint the item. Cool though!

Left is sig from the Yaz print. Right is sig from a drawing by Neal Portnoy, Boston-based artist (his website). I dunno...maybe? |
I was hoping Dan would show up but I figured he would have the answer. I know he has a huge Yaz collection.
I think the signatures match, and since the artist was Boston based that helps confirm his identity. So now we know the artist . Thanks for the detective work. I would still love to know when ( guessing mid 1970s) , if more Red Sox exist , and distribution. Thanks Scott |
Check out Carnevale Gallery Portnoy
He has some really nice artwork. Particularly like the Russell Wilson painting. Maybe someone can post a link. Thanks |
He's got an email addy on that homepage of his. Maybe he remembers something about the commission

Thanks,
Back in the late 70's, early 80's, I illustrated a number of the Red Sox players and printed them as 11x14 offset prints. They were sold by me individually and also by Souvenir Twins memorabilia store on Yawkey Way across from Fenway Park. Yaz, Fisk, Lynn, Rice, Evans, Remy, Boomer and more Reply from artist ! Mystery solved |
