Monday Nite Trivia.....

Time to take a break from the incessant "TPG disaster" commentary.

And, let's see who here will be tonite's TRIVIA QUIZ WHIZ ?

Besides an amazingly powerful and accurate rifle arm, which threw OUT many runners at Homeplate (thrown
from his Right-Field position), who is this guy and what is his main claim to fame ?

Not Hank Bauer....try again.

Incidentally, this is a 1950 Bowman card.

I know the answer, but I had to look it up. I'll wait to let others guess. This is a good one that I did not know.

Ted-Is that Tommy Heinrich and, if it is, he was the batter when Mickey Owens dropped the third strike?

I’m wrong, but I looked it up. Great trivia question Ted.

Cliff Mapes. Claim to fame is that he wore #7 before Mickey Mantle.

Hi Howard

Cliff Mapes is the guy.....and yes, he wore #7 before Mickey.

But, there is one more significant fact which completes this quiz.

Hmm...when I hear the name Cliff Mapes, I think back to The Great American Baseball Card Flipping, Trading, and Bubble Gum Book and the author's contention that he couldn't pull Ted Williams from a pack, but no matter what (please forgive the double negative) he couldn't NOT pull a Cliff Mapes from a pack.

Last person to wear #3 before it was retired in honor of Babe Ruth?

Howard and Evan are the Trivia Quiz Whiz Kings tonite.

In my young days playing BB, I had a great arm. I was usually the Right-Fielder. And therefore, I really identified with Cliff Mapes.
I saw Cliff (on TV) make some unbelievable throwing plays in his days with the Yankees. He would pick-off a runner at Homeplate with a 300-foot (on the fly) throw.

In 1935, George Selkirk replaced Babe Ruth in Right-Field for the Yankees, and Selkirk wore #3 thru 1942.
