Ty Cobb T206

I’m looking to lock down any of the Cobbs from the T206 set after tax season. Current eBay buy it now prices and their taxes are crazy. I’m thinking a nice SGC 2-3. Sgc 3 likely top end for my budget. What are you guys thinking is a fair price in buying from a collector not dealing with selling fees. I know this is a pretty broad question. I want solid eye appeal and a decent centered front no major creasing into his picture. I could deal with a minor back staining or paper loss. Opinions? Thoughts. I’m hoping 1800-2300 range. Is that realistic?

wait for auctions...there will likely be 200+ of these cards auctioned this year...

There will be more than that listed on eBay this month.

Once you have cash in hand watch eBay and the BST section on here. DO NOT advertise you are looking for one. When you find one you are happy with that is close to what you want to pay make an offer.

Definitely wait for an auction. If I counted correctly, REA had 32 different T206 Cobbs in their last auction. At $1800-2300, I think you will be able to get any pose except green in a 2. You would probably need to get lucky to get a 3 in that price range though.

You guys are awesome thanks for the feedback and helpful tips. I’m a member of quite a few auction houses that maybe the way to go for sure. Great point also Ben. I have some trade ammunition also with some of my collection but like most true collectors it’s hard to let anything go in the PC.

Definitely a 2, maybe a 2.5. You're looking at 3k for a 3, SGC or PSA. Nice, centered Cobbs free of creases will probably hit the high end of your range for a 2.

If you are patient you can find good deals. Just look a whole lot :) 1 bought this one 6 mos ago for 2139 delivered, off of the bay. The seller had it for a few hundred more, if I recall, and I negotiated down....There are no creases but are a few small spider wrinkles on the front, which is the reason for the grade. And there is a chance it has been soaked. Not sure.

Leon,
That card is a beauty and really presents well. That’s a great eBay find and great deal with eye appeal. With taxes and all wrapped up at that price that’s a card definitely worth buying. I have certainly learned buy the card not the grade. Congrats on this one.

A very nice looking red Cobb just popped up on BST.

I would echo being patient and buying the right Cobb rather than the first Cobb. I only paid $1,600 for this beauty a few years ago:

Awesome. Thanks for posting I love seeing you alls pick ups as well and the stories behind. I’m so ready for tax time and start more serious looking to pick up my first.

No need to wait for an auction if you find one reasonably priced here or on Ebay. They come up often enough. I agree with others that a decent 2, or maybe an SGC 2.5 should be in your range.

That is an almost perfect card imho......

myself. Theres still demand!!!!
@2800+18%BP....3304 had to be peak market.
It was surely a nice card too.

Thanks guys. My advice is to get the Cobb you want when you can get it. But don’t buy any old Cobb you can afford.

Exactly, unless you plan on it being a hole filler, which I have done before. It's not really the best strategy if you think another nice one will come up very soon. But the best specimens of our cards will keep and gain value more than nominally nice ones, in my opinion. And I predict eye appeal over grade will continue it's momentum for pre-war. I don't know about the rest so much.

You guys are definitely right. I should be in position to offer on a nice one soon. I’ll be holding off to look likely in person at Strongsville Ohio Vintage show in April.

Thank you Leon. I’ll be selective but I’m hoping to come away with a Cobb, if not a nice “Big Train” T206 would be a wonderful consolation prize.

The Wajo portrait is a great card when in nice shap. Good luck in the hunt....which is a lot of fun for many of us.
