T224/T229 need clarification
Hi there,
I do not post very often but I spend quite a bit of time here researching stuff. My questions are about the T224/T229 Sports Champions, Pet cigarettes and Kopec cigarettes, first of all, my copy of the ACC doesn't have T224 listed, both Pet and Kopec backs are grouped under the one listed for the T229. #1) Where is the T224 appellation coming from? Would it be from an earlier version of the ACC (mine is 1967)? #2) I'm trying to put a checklist together for my project, I read somewhere that there is 50 cards in the set, my ACC doesn't state how many cards there is. So far I got 38 different ones, does anybody can add to the list? Monte Attell George Bond Walter Brookins Frankie Burns Tommy Burns Eddie Campi James J. Here's Ward. I can't help with the list. I used to own a few boxers. I always assumed the checklist for Pet and Kopec was the same. Don't know.

Connection to Obak artwork?

Looking at the artwork in the posted Ward card, makes me wonder if there is a connection to the Obak cards. Both sets have Factory No. 171 1st DIST. CAL as well!

I just pulled-out a few older editions of the ACC. Up through the 1956 reprint edition, Burdick had T224 listed as "Prizefighters, Pet cigarettes" and T229 listed as "Sports Champions, Kopec cigarettes". In the 1960 ACC T224 was dropped completely and T229 was expanded to "Sports Champions, Kopec and Pet cigarettes.

The Pet and Kopec sets were split into two by Burdick, before the 'error' here was corrected and the sets united into one.
They were almost certainly printed by the same printer who did T212 Obak. It is probably a late 1911 or 1912 issue, based on the events mentioned on card reverses. A significant number of cards seem to have purple stamps on the back. I think there are 40 cards with no short prints (some seem less available because they are more popular and sitting in collections). It appears all cards have both Pet and Kopec backs, but I have not confirmed them all or kept scans. Hopefully the formatting is preserved, but here is what I have as the checklist. 1 Walter Brookins Aviator 2 Glenn Curtiss Aviator 3 Hubert Latham Aviator 4 P.O. Thank you Gentlemen, exactly what I was looking for, the amount of knowledge on this board is incredible, as I said earlier, I do not post very often but I do read a lot.
The only issue I have here, and it is like that on any other forum, is the pictures disappearing and links (think ebay) becoming obsolete. Thanks again |
You might be able to find the images again either on worthpoint, VCP, PWCC marketplace history, or PSA's website.
