Not merely a tobacco era phenomenon!

Tyruscobb 12-28-2019 07:51 AM

The post-war obvious answer is Willie Mays. Topps used Willie Mays’ same picture for his ‘55, ‘56, & ‘57 cards.

I’m having computer issues or would post all three.

Orioles1954 12-28-2019 08:17 AM

I think you mean 1954, 1955 and 1956.

Well done Ted! and I think it tops the Mays 1 image three years, but that might be open for debate.

I wonder, was Yaz really that hard to get a picture of? His 1966 and 1967 are almost identical poses, but not the same photo.

Actually, I don't think the '66 and '67 poses are that close--especially the facial expression and bat position. I don't know what the deal was for Yaz in the 60's--- 60 and 61 are the same, 63 and 64, 68 and 69, and even the '68 checklist uses his 1962 pic.

Interesting how they could photo shop out Bugs Raymond on the notebook cover even back in the day.

I don't have any images, but isn't the photo on the 64T Pete Rose the same one used on the '63?

Few Wheats

TUM301 12-31-2019 09:08 AM

Seems like almost every Joe Jackson card is black and white with a great many just like the enclosed shot of this Stars of the Diamond notebook.

The entire 1923 W572 set shares the same images with the 1922 W573 and1922 E120 American Caramel sets - with the exception of Ty Cobb who gets a couple different poses.

Paul Thompson's portrait of Christy Mathewson appears in the 1911 Spalding Baseball Guide and on several cards and collectibles, including:

T205 Gold Border
T202 Hassan Triple Folders
S74 Silks
T330-2 Piedmont Art Stamps
T332 Helmar Stamps
P2 Pins

(The photo and the Spalding Guide page are from the Library of Congress web site.
The "A Fan for a Fan", 1914 Pritchard Stamp, and T332 Helmar Stamp are not mine - photos are taken from auction sites.)

I know this Wheat image was used on some other cards (see post 26 :)) though I don't have any at the moment.

steve B 01-03-2020 04:22 PM

Same image rotated for a different set. I haven't seen this one mentioned before, and have held off because the T206 maybe has something interesting going on. But it's been years, so....

Those Cobbs are great!

A few of the T205 images are also used on the rare Schmelzer's Sporting Goods pins issue, for Cobb, Schmidt, Hoffman, and Evers (but not Mathewson for some reason).

Kenny, this nice run of your Zach Wheat cards speaks to me because it is similar to my run of Sam Rice cards. I especially like your Witmor Candy example because it is in such nice condition and your Standard Biscuit example because I'm still searching for an example of Rice.

kdixon 01-05-2020 07:34 PM

Thanks Val. Your Rice collection is amazing. I need to learn how to scan and do a better job on photographing runs.

Leon 01-08-2020 09:32 AM

Now that is great. You go, Val....
