A Slew of Fake M101-5s on COMC ?
Any thoughts on these? I don't care for the larger white area around the border on them but maybe it's just me and they aren't fake?

Four fakes.

Absolutely fake
Plus what’s with the prices? They would be ridiculous even for the real things.

Semantics
Actually they are all real--reprints. The Merkle even fails to scratch off the "nt". Thankfully, all but one are overpriced by 1000%, so they are not going anywhere.

What are the odds, all 4 cars have nearly the exact wear pattern in the lower right corner. As if someone scratched the word "reprint" off all of them.

Fake
The seller also has a fake Cracker Jack on COMC.

A quick check of the web for reprints of Sporting News cards turned up these being sold on Amazon. Notice where the word "REPRINT" is located.

ANYTIME you see a card on COMC which does not look good -- you can always let me know ASAP.
I will put ensure there is a hold on anything so desired as we don't want bad cards on the site. Those cards are all on hold as of right now (I did that this AM before seeing this thread) Rich |
fakes
I reported these to COMC, but I doubt that anything will happen.
Rich, I just saw your thread. Thank you for reporting these. I wonder how they made it through the listing process with no one noticing? |
There were about 6 Cracker Jacks that were fake and uploaded a couple of days ago. I reported them; they need to be removed from sale, not just marked "Must be authenticated."
They are still listed on eBay marked "Original" under the "Original/Reprint:" question in the Item Specifics section. The seller should really be called and admonished for mailing in aged reprints. And the intake department should be trained to notice the difference between real and fake Cracker Jacks and M101s. |
Leon, thanks for pointing these out.

Exhibit
Rich, I had an Exhibit Lou Gehrig that I sent in thinking REPRINT (this board thinks it's very likely a REPRINT) and am having it sent to back to me. COMC listed it as authentic and if it turns about to be a reprint by PSA, etc. I could have "flipped" in on COMC for 1K+ at someone's misfortune if I were unscrupulous.....
Also, on the vintage side, it does not appear that COMC employees can tell the difference between a miscut and trimmed card. I have several dollar type miscut cards listed on there deemed TRIMMED which ARE NOT. For example, miscut cards with portion of other cards they tagged them as TRIMMED--makes no sense. |

As I'm 2000 miles away I don't know everything that is going on in the home office but you can always ask for a condition review and we can always take a 2nd or 3rd look or as many as it takes to see if we can take the extra deep dive to verify your cards. Ever since this "scandal" broke we're always going to err on the side of caution and we will continue to do so. But put in a correction request for a condition review on ANY of your cards and we will take a second look. And if it from a group of cards in the same submission, you can also send an email to staff@comc.com and then CC me on any email you send as well. Rich |
