What year(s)? Value? Any significance? Any help appreciated?
Not viewable in the photo's - the word "YOUTHS" is stamped above the center brand. The bat measures 31.5 inches. |
H&B Bat
The Patent date for this style of bat comes back as being 1902..

If 1902 is the thinking, it can not be as Hillerich and Bradsby did not come into being until around 1921. The dash dot dash also would make you think it is from around the 1900's era....perhaps this was a commemorative bat of some kind or a bat which was just using the different stampings for practice or something.....as the dating just does not line up at all....would be interested in other thoughts here!

Check that....I mis-spoke....circa 1916 or so....with the dash dot dash...for Bradsby CO.

Here is what is possibly the earliest Hillerich stamping (& SON) ...circa 1897...the factory was located at this address until 1901 according to the historian at Louisville Slugger...

The earliest one I have seen is the copyright bat:

Yes...I agree! I remember this one now...attic find I think.

So far....
Based on following up the links that were shared it appears the bat is from between 1916 (when Bradsby joins the Co) and 1921 (when the center brand is changed from -.- to Made in USA). Any other information - seems like possibly a little league store model? Would the "fancy" patent number stamped in the barrel be consistent with a standard store model bat of that time period? Assuming little league store model from that era - value?

That dating sounds pretty logical to me.
I think I have one with that type of script (but I don't think the words are exactly the same), and I paid like $75 for mine. But I am not an expert in bat prices; other than I often pay too much, according to the home accounting office. :D |
Also, that is a beautiful bat.
I would be interested if you are looking to sell, but in that case, you should get someone else's opinion on value. :) |
Thanks Sean
