December Pickups
3 Attachment(s)
I'll take the liberty of kicking off the December Pickup thread.
While doing some of my typical searches on eBay this morning, I came across this scarce PR photo taken of the 1944 Sampson Naval Training Center (NY) baseball team featuring several major leaguers including Johnny "Double No-Hit" Vander Meer, Hal White, Connie Ryan, Del Ennis and Red McQuillen. Vandy is the 2nd player from the left in the 2nd row from the bottom in the photo. For the record, Sampson's 1944 baseball team went 25-2 against their competition including some major league teams including the Cincinnati Reds and Boston Red Sox as well as several from the International League. Vandy pitched 5 times during their schedule, going 4-1. I'm happy to add this to my Vandy collection. Happy Holidays to everyone on net54! |
Another great addition to your Vandy collection Scott.

These arrived today. They have long been on my want list. Now that I have them I must admit to feeling a bit silly about that.

Came from Shoeless Joe country...Greenville S.C. I'm guessing fresh to the hobby, well as fresh as something from 1912 can be. Heavy lil' sucker. Gonna pour a beer in it and drink from it like the Stanley Cup tonight.
|
Awesome pickup Paul...
I've always thought that was one of the prettiest vintage trophies out there. What a beauty... congrats! |

Picked up Catfish Hunter win #192 ticket (16,320 att). Not rare, but very cheap, LOL. Also picked up two vintage unsigned magazines to send out to get autographed. Will show those when they get signed.

I scored an epic pickup from Lelands that fits my collection to a tee...
A Base from the last game ever played at Crosley Field. Not sure whether it was 1st, 2nd, or 3rd... but it's something I undoubtedly gazed at with wonder from the stands, as a kid. These bases were very well-used for many games, so it surely had a long life at Crosley Field. My best baseball memories involve going there with my father, during the early formation of the Big Red Machine. So this was a nice score, and one I can easily remember my Dad by. Impeccable provenance as well, having come from the estate of Reds' long-time Equipment Manger, Bernie Stowe. https://auction.lelands.com/bids/bidplace?itemid=95958 |

A dozen golf balls, ca. 1960's, from the Giants' Francisco Grande spring training base. Horace Stoneham built this place in the early 1960's. It included a golf course, baseball practice diamonds and a bat shaped swimming pool, among other features.
