Can anyone tell me what this is? Measures 2 3/8" x 1 3/8" and is printed on very thick stock.

Thanks in advance.

Bryan, do you have a scan of the back?

It looks kind of like a 1920's strip card, but I have not seen this design before. Where did you find it?

Jobu 11-24-2019 01:53 PM

Hey Rick,

I just added a back scan, it is blank. It came from an estate picker in New York.

Thanks for adding the pic of the back, Bill. Looks like a 20's strip card that I have not seen before. Maybe others can ID it. Nice find.

I have seen thousands of strips and never seen one like that. Very interesting.

Curious caption-"P&A photo" for a line drawing.

I did a quick search for P&A Photo. but found nothing of value.

Purely a hunch but it looks like some kind of game piece to me.

Strip card

I’m voting for a reprint made not in the era. Hate that modern font on the name and the thick stock.

That was my first thought but why?

No clue on what this is - but P & A photo probably stands for Pacific & Atlantic photo. They provided the photo for one card (out of the 120) in the W572 set.

Cheers,
Patrick

This card reminds me of a mystery one I have that seems to have, for some reason, been produced many decades after the strip card era. Here is a link to the thread that a helpful Net54'er pinned down the source of the image, and scans of the mystery card and a W515, both of which seem to have been derived from the same photo, shown below.

Here's a link to what looks like original photo... from here one of our uniform experts can probably date the card...

Nice spotting! It looks like the photo is identified as being from 1923.

Thanks Tim - nice find! (Sorry I missed your post the first time around.)

Anyone else ever seen a card like this? I emailed Lyman and it is new to him as well.

The back looks a little like fake aging but that doesn't make financial sense. Possibly part of a reprint set? Or could be real :)

Jobu 01-21-2020 08:38 AM

In hand it feels and looks like it is probably legit. The thickness makes me think maybe it was cut out of a box, but hard to say.

I will try to remember to bring it to the next National I attend to see what people think (...and I look forward to forgetting).

Forgetting is real aging.

Bringing this one back around for a fresh look. Has anyone ever seen a card like this before?

FrankWakefield 12-30-2020 09:44 PM

I've not seen strip cards like that. The font doesn't look consistent with strip cards of the 20's. It doesn't look right.

Shine a black light on that card. I think it will fluoresce, and when it does you'll know that it's not genuine. And I hope I'm wrong and that you've got a 'find' there...
