questions about photos used for '51 Bowman
Anybody have info about when the photos were taken, who the photographers were, and if there's a resource somewhere to view the original photographs used for the 1951 Bowman art work? And do any of you know who were the painters of the art work and how closely they generally stuck to copying what was in the original photos?

Some great questions Glen. Hope someone has some or all of the answers

I think a lot of the images used were team issued photos, like some of the Reds, I also saw some St Louis Browns Dorrill photos.
A lot of the Dodgers images were the same as the 1949 Team Picture Pack https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...ff239e18_k.jpg Had some free time and these are some I found https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c8a9710a_z.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...00290d04_z.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...99b5ffb3_z.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/6553/4...340d8c88_z.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...d13920b8_z.jpg https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/...c4201d4f_z.jpg |
Yeah, they were probably all team-issued photos. The Mickey Mantle was taken by team photographer Bob Olen.

William Jacobellis
Many of the Bowman and Topps photos were taken by William Jacobellis, including 1951.
There is a pretty good article on his Bowman and Topps connections, including a deciphering of his back notes which can indicate who he dealt with. Sometimes the painter changed the uniform (home or road) other times he changed the team if there was a trade. If you have trouble finding the article I will dig out my copy. Just in case anyone has any Ashburn photos for cards or otherwise, please let me know. Very interested |
