N.y. Baseball giants megaphone - need help please
2 Attachment(s)
Hi Guys!
I just picked up a large sized N.Y. Giants (baseball) megaphone (see below). It's 32" long and has "N.Y. Giants Baseball Club" painted on one side. The rivets all look to be vintage. Does anyone know what era this is from? I was told it's pre-1930, but I'm thinking that it may be from the 50's. I tried to photo match it, but came up empty. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Lou |
That looks like something that would have been used at the game, like for the public address announcer at the games. If so, that would probably make it pre-1930's. I looked for photos of George Levy who used one at the Polo Grounds in the early years, but came up empty. I did find this but not a great photo.

Here's a paragraph that looked interesting as well
https://books.google.com/books?id=e2...aphone&f=false That would really be cool if you had an original NY Giants megaphone used at the games in the early 1900's. |
Awesome piece, Lou. I agree with pre -1930s.

Thanks so much for all your help. I'm still hoping to find a photo match.

Here is a photo I have from Pat Piper who was the legendary public address announcer at Wrigley Field for decades and would eventually retire in the 1970's. This photo is from the 1930's and looks very close to your megaphone with the handle and apparent metal mouthpiece. If I had to put a time frame on your item I would say easily early to mid 30's but I am no expert.
"Now get your pencils and scorecards ready...and Pat will give you the correct lineup for today's ball game".... |
that looks like a tremendous item. I'm reminded that when I was a boy I attended some sort of old timers' game (possbily the 60th anniversary of the opening of Forbes Field) when they announced the lineups through a megaphone like that. I remember that it wasn't all that easy to hear what the guy was saying, even though we had some pretty good seats.

Have seen a lot of them over the years with and without names painted on them. All different sizes and colors.
I would be weary of it. |
Same here the lettering just looks way to clean

I think the lettering looks too sloppy. This is supposed to be a megaphone used at home in the Polo Grounds, right? Then why would the team need to put "N Y. GIANTS B.B. CLUB" on it? It isn't traveling anywhere. The Giants had a pretty solid graphic identity over the years with their "NY" design. I would imagine if this was a Polo Grounds-used megaphone and if it did have markings it would have that nice "NY" on it or "GIANTS" in a fancy typeface, not something that looks like a stencil for a footlocker. I think the Giants had more pride than to field something that crude.
Plus, is it missing a period after the "N"? |
If Lou puts this in an auction, I hope you’ll all let me get it for cheap! :p
|
Any history on how it was obtained or found? If real it is a great item, a bit skeptical as looks like a restoration job or too good imho

Hi Guys!
Thanks again for all your help. I'm not sure what to do with it until I get get some solid authentication. I've showed it around and nobody can give a definitive judgement. Lou |
