Hakes’ Wins and thoughts on Auction

I thought that the Hakes internet only auction was simply put very weird. Some items, most notably the Billikens, went much higher then expected. Every thing else went super low. I picked up the items below for less then 200 total (including pretty high shipping).

1922-23 Tomas Gutierrez Calvo

Let’s see you wins and hear your thoughts. I know a lot of the material in this auction was of less well known players, but it’s still really rare stuff. Was the auction not well viewed or is the market on this stuff really this thin

I forgot about the auction.

I was looking to add some Bilikens but the prices were unbelievable for "commons" of Caucasian non-negro league players
Nearly $1000 for Charlie Dressen?

Billikens are beautiful cards and even the commons are rare. But 1000 for Charlie Dressen is crazy. I am sure at some point in the 1920’s Charlie Dressen, the actual player, was sold for less the 1000

Dang, didn't even know there was one. I spent too much with Love of the Games lol

I thought it was a great auction with some very rare stuff. Hakes takes getting used to but they always have very unusual, hard to find material.

I’ll be honest. If they don’t advertise on here then I would never even know about the auction. I get all of my auction information from here. I can’t be the only one...

i would say combination of all the factors you noted.

i definitely think market is that thin for those things.

rare doesn't always mean valuable.

broadly, i think the current market cares more about iconic pieces than it does rare ones, unless it's combo of both...and then watch out!

sounds like you're pretty happy, so nice job bidding.

I was not aware of it, from here or other advertising.

Me either.

I use AuctionReport for all the AH listings, but sometimes they dont list some others-
like Hakes & Brockelman....thus I check OldCardboard for those AH's.

The Billikens had two things going for them even though they were “commons”: superior image quality and the fact that each card had single digit graded copies.

Some Net54ers thing that if they've seen a lot, it's unethical for an auction house to advertise the auction :D

First time participating in a Hake's auction....very pleased with my two wins. Just missed out on the Slim Love Tomas Gutierrez (only wanted it because Slim Love is a FANTASTIC name).

I'm probably way old fashioned, but I'm still not used to seeing hakes do something besides political campaign buttons.
