Germany Schaefer....show us some of his cards
The Prince....as he was often called because of his flashy showmanship on the field always enjoyed performing in front of his hometown crowd, and on June 24, 1906,
he turned in one of the most memorable games of his career. Schaefer was called on to pinch hit with two outs in the ninth, a runner on base, and his Tigers down by one run. According to teammate Davy Jones in The Glory of Their Times, Germany announced to the crowd: "Ladies and gentlemen you are now looking at Herman Schaefer, better known as Herman the Great, acknowledged by one and all to be the greatest pinch-hitter in the world. I am now going to hit the ball into the left field bleachers. Thank you." Facing Chicago's Doc White, Schaefer proceeded to hit the 1st pitch into the left field bleachers for a game-winning HR. Tipped his cap and said "Ladies and Gentlemen, this concludes this afternoon's performance. I thank you for your kind attention." Germany Schaefer was quite the character, and certainly a favorite of many BaseBall fans of that era. So here's my question to you guys..... how does this event compare with Babe Ruth's dramatic "called shot" in the 1932 World Series ? The 460 series T206 Schaefer was printed with 13 backs*. I'll start this show by displaying my 87 % complete run of them. Still need his CYCLE 460 and TOLSTOI cards. I've included his 1915 T213-2 card, which incorrectly identifies him with K.C. (Federal League.) Actually, Schaefer played with Newark in 1915. Can any of you EPDG specialist account for this front/back combo ? My opinion says it's a No-Print. TED Z T206 Reference . |
Here's my 1914 T213-2 with The Yankees. The W was removed for this card. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...6429cbf182.jpg

Mr Schaefer was quite the character! As for which I prefer, Ted, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

However, the 1914 date on SGC's flip is wrong. Schaefer played for Washington in 1914. In 1915, Schaefer joined the Newark Pepper (Federal League). Jan 21, 1916 the New York Yankees purchased Schaefer from Newark. He played in one game for them. TED Z T206 Reference . |

Germany Schaefer's "called shot" of his Walk-Off HR in 1906....show some of his cards

Another excerpt from Schaefer's SABR write-up.... "On at least one occasion Schaefer stole first base. On August 4, 1911, in the bottom of the ninth, Schaefer stole second, hoping to draw a throw and allow teammate Clyde Milan, who was on third with the potential winning run, to steal home. White Sox catcher Fred Payne didn't fall for the gambit, however, so Schaefer, now on second, took his lead toward the first-base side of the bag and promptly stole first on a subsequent pitch. Sox manager Hugh Duffy came out to argue, and while Duffy jawed with umpire Tommy Connolly, Schaefer scampered for second again. This time Schaefer got caught in a rundown, as had been his intention, and Milan dashed for home, where he was nipped to end the inning. Schaefer and his teammates then argued unsuccessfully that the play should be nullified because the White Sox had ten players on the field, although Duffy hadn't been an active player since 1908. The official scorer credited Schaefer with only one stolen base, but he "had a perfect right to go from second back to first," umpire Connolly insisted after the game." TED Z T206 Reference . |

I was thinking of doing a back run of this Schaefer pose, but decided not to because I have too many other projects. I've recently sold 3 of these, but the 2 Croft's cards are available - PM or email me if interested. ekehl333@aol.com

Germany Schaefer's "called shot" of his Walk-Off HR in 1906....show some of his cards
The T206 Schaefer (Detroit) card is a 150/350 Series subject. Furthermore, it is one of 11 subjects in the set we refer to as the "Elite 11".
This T206 was printed with only two 350 series backs, PIEDMONT 350 and El PRINCIPE de GALES (EPDG), both of which are quite scarce. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...DMONT350bk.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...ferEPDGx50.jpghttp://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...EPDGx25b_1.jpg http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...30Hindu12x.jpg The 150 Series backs normally associated with the Elite 11 subjects....(Note....Schaefer was NOT printed with brown HINDU) TED Z T206 Reference . |

Hey guys,
I am reiterating my previous question here regarding the Schaefer (Washington) card......does any one on this forum have (or have seen) this card with an EPDG back ? I have never seen an EPDG back on this Schaefer card in my 40 years of collecting T206 cards. Thanks in advance for your inputs, TED Z T206 Reference . |

I'm surprised that no one has posted a T205 of Schaefer.
It's a colorful card....so, here you go. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...haeferT205.jpg . http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...haeferT205.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |
Ted- What kind of stamp/puncher do you think caused those holes in your Uzit example? I think you might have owned another card like that too, no? Any insight?

Hi Mike That tiny punch-hole pattern has been seen on a few other T206 cards. My guess is that the original owner of this Schaefer card punched holes in his cards in order to distinguish them from other collections. Many years ago, I acquired a 1933 GOUDEY collection in which some of the cards had one punch-hole, while other cards had two punch-holes. The owner told me that he and his brother kept track of their cards in this manner. http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...ferUZITx25.jpg . http://photos.imageevent.com/tedzan7...erUZITx25b.jpg TED Z T206 Reference . |
Cool, thanks Ted. This multi-hole punch is actually quite attractive; pleasing geometric pattern.
