Comics Book/baseball card connection
 

A friend gave me this Wonder Woman #50 comic book and I was flipping through and found these cool ads. I guess comics should be full of baseball card related stuff? Lets see some comic book/baseball card stuff or some of these rare cards.

The Royal Desserts (or Royal Pudding) cards are very special. These black tinted cards were issued in the early 1950s and found on the back of pudding boxes. Kids were supposed to cut them out and complete the whole set. The company made baseball cards, hockey cards, basketball and film cards. The baseball cards are the easiest ones to find and this is because the company probably printed more of them (due to higher demand). The movie cards are more challenging, however, most collectors don't care about movie cards. I think they look beautiful though. Now the hockey set is very tough and the Gordie Howe is the most sought-after one. And finally, the basketball set is extremely difficult to put together. The George Mikan card is very special. And finally, there are blue tint versions found of these cards as well. These blue tint cards were found on the back of Royal Custard boxes only. They are also very rare and worth more than the black tint cards.

I have a ton of 1950's-1960's comics. Guess I'll have to dig them out. I do remember when I was a kid, I'd look at old Boy's Life magazines and look at the old ads and classifieds.

Let's get the correct nomenclature. ;)

In the comics circle, this would be know as an "FA" of Larry McPhail in a comic (First Appearance). Depending on the content, it could be his "origin" as well. :D

Excellent! Thanks for the tutorial! I should use the "FA" nomenclature to supplant "rookie" or "earliest" for my baseball HOF collection. I'm on it!

And a really good baseball card is a "star" card. A comic of some importance (usually a FA) is known as a "key".

Will Eisner, one of the biggest names in comics (one of the industry's awards is named after him) and best known for the character The Spirit, published a comic book called Baseball Comics in 1949.

The main character is the fictional Rube Rooky, but there's a two-page text feature, "The '49 Recruits," profiling a number of rookies, including Richie Ashburn, Gene Woodling, and Alvin Dark. There's also a 4-page comics story by Jules Feiffer, "The Sunday Ride of Babe Herman."
