Epic Pre-War Find

So cool seeing all those tobacco and candy cards together and that Ruth is incredible.

frankbmd 07-05-2019 09:29 AM

The Ruth is “strictly graded” as a PSA 6. Hmmmmm...........

Could they (the TPG) possibly be setting the table for the resubmission “money-minting” game eloquently described by Mr. Slo£te in another recent thread?

Much of the remaining collection, although impressive, looks like it will not be fodder for contemporary practitioners of cardboard medicine, if you get my drift.

Rhotchkiss 07-05-2019 09:33 AM

WOW- I would love to see the backs of those Cobbs and wagners in the first picture

barrysloate 07-05-2019 09:38 AM

I think that F & B Ruth is a beauty. Are you suggesting a bump to a 7? It's perfectly centered, and it has everything going for it. A "wow" card for sure. And although the T and E cards are worn, they are really deep in key players. What an amazing group of cards...not to mention the five Goudey Ruths.

barrysloate 07-05-2019 09:47 AM

Here's a cool thing about the collection, if you like numbers. We know that the 33G #144 Ruth is double-printed, and the other three poses are singles. Sure enough, this collection has two #144's and one each of the other three. That's perfect mathematical distribution!

PSA couldn't even put that 1916 Ruth in a proper fitting slab...jeez.

Aquarian Sports Cards 07-05-2019 10:07 AM

Epic find.

They don't have one and the cost is way too high to make one for an issue like this. i think people would be shocke if they new the cost of a new holder to be made. it is crazy a lot more than you would guess.

“PSA couldn't even put that 1916 Ruth in a proper fitting slab...jeez.”

That’s why I would have used SGC!

What? Sorry that's weak. PSA is supposed to be the most professional, the foremost grader, authenticator, and the market leader. That card if shipped to someone is going to slide around in there and look like crap at a minimum; or get damaged at worst.

I love these two lines from the article:

"She wasn’t as sure about the collection of black and white cards with ads from a St. Louis department store on the back.

“We just thought, ‘oh, these are Famous & Barr cards, who would want these?'”

As well as all the other caramels. Looks like a number of E90-1 from what I can tell, but given the St. Louis connection, I wonder how many E92 Nadja. Peter C can you fill us in some?

Just finished reading about this, it's not often early cards are kept for this long. Most of the time they had been trashed or forgotten. Many parents back in the 70s and 80s never asked and just cleaned up areas for space, great to hear this family at least kept them safe. Looks like some nice avg cards that collectors can afford.

A lot of these cards are eventually going to get cracked out and trimmed, and then resubmitted for grading. A lot of money is going to be made from this find.

There’s a house in town that my mother in law cleans.
It’s for an elderly lady that lives in the house that she grew up in.

The lady living in it, She’s in her late 70’s.

The ladies parents grew up in the same house.

3 generations of hoarders.... they won’t go through anything.

I’m telling you there’s a Wagner at that house... I’ve said it for years.

There’s an attic and a basement full of boxes that haven’t been touched for 100 years or longer

I know, cool story lol

It drives me nuts.

Great find here... congrats those people !

I'm most excited that most of the cards were well loved and not PSA 9's and 10's. This guy loved playing around with his favorite players.

I would be tempted to offer something to let you take a look in those boxes. Maybe offer to cover the cleaning costs for a month and help her sell the cards if you find anything of value.

That’s a good idea and I wish it was only that easy...

They won’t let anything be thrown away... have EXTREME wealth and live in a 100 plus year old house buckets collecting water from the leaky roof.
Original refrigerator still in operation etc. it’s cool, but also pretty weird.

I would be shocked if there aren’t cards in that house.

kateighty 07-06-2019 06:08 PM

Anyone else think this is related to the guy who posted here a few weeks ago about the estate collection of cards that were going to be major? Hmmm.

I don't doubt that if it was that easy you would have tried already. Sounds like a very eccentric family.

Joshwesley 07-06-2019 08:42 PM

That’s putting it VERY nicely 😂😂🤣

Things change and who knows what tomorrow will bring.....

I’m keeping my eye on the situation

Maybe just ask straight up? You'd be surprised. If your mother in law cleans there it's not like you're some random weirdo. You wouldn't be throwing anything away, you'd be saving and preserving it. Give it a try!

I’m not even supposed to have ever stepped foot inside the house (if you
Catch my drift)?

They are super private... no one is supposed to know the conditions they live in etc.

They are getting up there in age and I’ll be monitoring the situation.

My MIL has worked for them for over 30 years (before my wife was born)

No telling what she might be left with (or nothing at all)

Who knows?

brob28 07-07-2019 05:36 PM

The Goudeys look like they are in great shape.
