Is this Cobb?

Is this Ty Cobb as a child?

First glance doesn't do it for me, which means it's probably him. But I am going with my first thought anyway. Someone might know, ya' never know.

I say no as well. I compared to his age 17 photo and the nose seems different along with the eyes. The part in the hair looks to be close.

No

How sure are you?

barrysloate 07-02-2019 05:24 PM

Jeff- do you have any documentation that suggests this is Cobb, or is this a shot in the dark?

sb1 07-02-2019 05:27 PM

Is this a cabinet photo? The style of dress looks too late for it to be Cobb at this age, can you post the entire piece front and back.

Could it be Ty Jr.? Either way - this pic below is from 1923 and if you look at what each boy is wearing they look similar, and like Scott said, the style of dress is too late to be Cobb.

Paul S 07-02-2019 05:59 PM

Nope. Dueling Banjos, maybe;)

CMIZ5290 07-02-2019 06:08 PM

Nope....Similarities, but not Cobb IMO

sb1 07-02-2019 06:14 PM

I think Peter is right, it appears to be Ty jr. but could still be someone totally unrelated. But it certainly looks like a match to him.

CMIZ5290 07-02-2019 06:27 PM

I say no to Cobb Jr as well. Look at the differences of the ears and mouth between the two pics....Cobb Jr has big ears like his Dad, the photo at top the boy has tiny ears....The shape of the lips are also way different....

Bicem 07-02-2019 07:48 PM

Think Peter nailed it, thank you!!!

It's a photo in the upcoming Heritage Platinum auction described as a young Ty Cobb.

Honest mistake by them, can understand the confusion.

pclpads 07-02-2019 08:30 PM

I say no, simply because he doesn't have his spikes up facing the camera. :D

Rhotchkiss 07-02-2019 08:36 PM

The validation/provenance is a letter from the family of one of Cobb’s former teammates.... you don’t feel comfortable relying on that?!

Me? No.

Rhotchkiss 07-02-2019 08:52 PM

I was joking, of course it’s unreliable :)

I think it's Junior.

Young Babe Ruth

When shown this photo without hesitation everyone say its the Babe!--if that's Cobb, this is the Babe!

The difference theirs may bring $100,000 plus--I want millions :D

Fred 07-02-2019 09:44 PM

Look at the ears, it can't be him..... :p

Ty Cobb was born in 1886. Does that photo actually look like it came from the mid 1890s?

Is there any REAL provenance for this beside from the Ty Cobb Collection? If it came from one of Cobb's former teammates, does that mean that (most likely) the grandchild of the former teammate would know it was Ty Sr. for sure and not as others have indicated, Ty Jr. (born around 1910).

photomoto 07-02-2019 10:06 PM

Is this Cobb?

Add me to the list who don't think the photo shows Ty Cobb Sr.

For further analysis of the image, contact the Ty Cobb Museum in Royston, Georgia. Incidentally, they have an image of twelve year old Ty Sr. which doesn't look like the boy in the Heritage photo. When I last served as a consultant for the museum, it was in contact with some of Cobb's descendants. They were usually helpful in analyzing photos relating to Cobb and his family.

Bicem 07-02-2019 10:16 PM

Thanks all, to me it looks exactly like Cobb Jr as ole' Pete pointed out.

drcy 07-02-2019 11:04 PM

I remember when someone was trying to convince he had the earliest card (CDV) of Honus Wagner, giving me all the argument points about the age and style of the CDV etc.

My response was simply, "But the guy doesn't look like Honus Wagner."

I will add my photo of Ty Jr. to the mix - and a close up with mom because we all know what dad looks like. Throwing in my baby photo of Herschel Cobb for the heck of it.

Jobu 07-03-2019 08:42 AM

And this link shows a picture of a young Ty Cobb senior, which doesn't quite look like the HA photo:
