1919 Joe Jackson
1 Attachment(s)
A person contacted me on Facebook and asked if I knew anything about a picture he posted. It is a picture of Joe Jackson full figure ,Sox uni, left hand on hip right hand on top of a baseball bat. Caption is Joe Jackson Left Field. I did some research and came up with maybe a 1919 Davis in one paragraph. But I don't know anything about the 1919 Davis - is it a page out of a magazine or an obscure set? There is paper loss from his left shoulder down through the figure and obscuring the last name and "Field" Face is intact. He might be willing to sell it also if anyone is interested. I asked him to join the site and post the picture but guess he couldn't figure out how to do that. I will pass any information on and then step out.
thanks. Jim |
I don't know what set this is from (if any) or if it is real or fake HOWEVER, a seller by the name of ACOFIND from Indiana used to sell these and they were all fake.

Thanks. That is more info than I had. Appreciate it. Jim |
According to my copy Standard Catalog of Vintage Baseball Cards, it is from a set purported to be issued in 1917 by Davis Printing Works. There is supposedly only one complete set known to exist; therefore I would assume that the card shown is a reprint.
Here is a thread about these cards from the Archive Center of this forum: http://www.net54baseball.com/showthread.php?t=64380 |

Thank you very much. I was looking for Davis and did not think of White Sox Team issue. With all this information I will pass on to him that his card is believed to be a reprint. I appreciate all the info the board has provided me. Jim |
I was at a party several years ago, maybe 7?, and was casually speaking with another collector when one of our party said he had that uniquely known 1917 set. I said, "it figures".
ps...I like it when 16 yrs old threads get linked to. Time flies.. |

Yes, it is great when that happens. I have passed the info on to the fellow but haven't heard back and don't figure I will since I told him it was most likely a repo. |
It has that faux-aged yellowing and unnatural staining common to the negro league and other fakes seen in recent years. Clever of them to rip a chunk out to add credibility when they know that would diminish its appeal very little to a potential buyer who thought it was real.

People will do all sorts of things to make others think something is the real McCoy.

I know the guy who bought the original set (back in the 80's) and saw it in person. I believe he sold it many years later but to whom I don't know. That said, that card is a repro. All the original cards were in beautiful condition and I would bet it is still a complete set even today.

Btw, coincidentally I believe it was the same guy I bought my Horner Composite from who sold that set back then, to it's current owner. I believe that was the tie in over a few cocktails that night. It must have been 10 (more than the 7 I said previously) or more years ago now...
What a great set that is. And I still love my Horner which sits in back of me every day in my office. This photo doesn't do any justice to it. http://luckeycards.com/horner1.jpg Quote:

It is hard to believe you have been here 5 yrs and haven't seen me showing off my Horner photo. It is the only thing I kept when I sold my first collection approximately 3 1/2 yrs ago. These were only given to executives in baseball and this one came from the estate of the guy in the suit, far upper right, Nixie Callahan. It is my theory there were 8 produced. I believe around 5 are known today. (it looks way better in person) |

Must have showed it off on a thread I didn't look at. It is really cool. It may look better in person (like me) but it sure looks great to me. Jim |
