Not sure if this is a variation or not. Updating images on VCP and noticed this one for a #11 Chicago Cubs white back name left. The "A" in Chicago is missing the center triangle. I looked at about 50 other images and could not find another. Is this a common error or something that should be recognized?

None of the visible Sold Out cards on COMC have that. Maybe Rich can look at the rest. Is the variation you posted white back or gray back? There's already 6 or so versions of that card; do we need anymore? ;-)

White back...I have so many images on VCP and not the time to go through them all right now to see if there are any more. But if there is one I am guessing there has to be some more.

I just finished going through all the images we have at VCP for that card and could not find another with that same variation. I only searched the White backs and not the gray backs

Had not seen that defect before and do not know if it is recurring. If it is I guess from what you and John have observed it is scarce. I think in the never ending variations thread a similar defect ( filled in A) was posted for a 60 or maybe 61 Koufax card.
Were they early errors that were quickly corrected or just a limited print defects ? Who will ever know. I lean towards the latter. Some feel variations should be limited to intentional changes in a card, but the hobby certainly recognizes as variations many differences that seem to just be recurring print defects Neat find, especially given all the already known variants to that card. Thanks for posting it |
I'm off from COMC until Wednesday as I take the days off around my bday (Tuesday) and then it may take me a couple of days before I catch up but I'll look at that, with any luck, by the end of the week.
Have Kyle's show Saturday so usually leaves a bit early to pack for that to save time Regards Rich |
Happy birthday Rich! That is also both my wife and daughter's birthday!

I had one of those defective cards, but just one small dot with a fine tip sharpie fixed it right up! ;)

Just like many of the 89 Fleer Ripken white outs 😊

Here’s my guess on this card. I don’t believe it’s in the card itself but rather the consequence of the scanner used to take the image. When I first started using my current scanner (epson V600), I had used a “dust removal” image correction setting that filled in some of the “a” letters in the image. See below for a bunch of filled in letters:

I see your point but this card was sold by a big seller with over 500,000 deals. His scans are big and clear..if that was the case then he would have lots of others with the same issue. |
I just reviewed all the COMC scans (active and sold out) and found none with the "A" filled in like that. That's one of those cards I should look for at the National or other big shows and see if I ever find one.
