Poll time - what percentage of PSA 10s are doctored?

So now that we've all seen the Blow Out evidence, what do folks think - what percentage of PRE-1980 PSA 10s are the result of card doctoring?

vintagetoppsguy 06-01-2019 11:33 AM

My guess is 51-70.%

swarmee 06-01-2019 11:34 AM

There a couple million PSA 10s. Mostly from newer products. I think 15% would be generous.

Peter_Spaeth 06-01-2019 11:39 AM

0-10. Most of the 10s, as stated, are of new inexpensive cards. I'd be shocked if it came anywhere close to 10 percent.

SMPEP 06-01-2019 11:41 AM

Fair points. Since this is vintage forum - let me see if I can edit the poll (not sure I can) and focus solely on the vintage stuff (say pre-1980?).

SMPEP 06-01-2019 11:43 AM

Actually looks like I can't edit the poll. Bummer.

Delete and try a second poll, and try Pre-WWII cards

barrysloate 06-01-2019 12:06 PM

Everyone who participates in this poll, myself included, is guessing as nobody has any concrete evidence whatsoever. But we are all free to guess...I guess.

bobbvc 06-01-2019 02:01 PM

Consider restarting the poll. Seems as if people are voting for different time periods. Could use a little more clarity IMO.

SMPEP 06-01-2019 04:09 PM

I did repost the poll.

It got 4 votes and then disappeared.

No clue why.

I went with the 71-90% option.

I guess it depends on what you call altering.

I would say that is accurate in both vintage and modern. Lower end on vintage and higher end on modern.

For vintage i just don't remember ever seeing cards from the 50s-70's that looked that(PSA 10) nice in the 1980s. Especially those super bright white borders. On modern, those cards get a little prep work before they go to the graders.

darwinbulldog 06-01-2019 05:08 PM

Worth noting that the BO/Moser/PWCC/PSA vintage cards I've been seeing average about a PSA 5 after doctoring. Maybe we were already skeptical enough of the 10s but need to be more cautious about everything else.

I totally agree!

I guess your right Barry, my guess anyway, sorry, couldn't resist........This is a crazy post because there's no way to really determine it...

It would make more sense to do this by issue. Obviously T206s and CJs and E93s are more likely to be trimmed than W600s and postcards.

Thanks, I thought so too.:D Never elk hunted in my life. I gave up killing poor defenseless animals over 25 years ago. I am going camping/fishing for the first time in probably 15 years next week. Pretty sure that will be catch and release though.

Why do you assume this jeff? As hot as postcards have been?

I am glad to hear you say that, I'm an animal advocate so that's good to hear...

I don't think high grade PCs are as valued relative to lower grade by collectors as high grade baseball cards are to lower graded cards. Oftentimes a perfect fronted PC will have been postally used and it's rendered a 1 when it would otherwise by a 5-6. Plus trimmed PCs are easier to spot due to the fact that they rarely have fat white borders. If you trim a PC, you end up losing some of the pictured front usually or some of the writing on the back.
