What's the oldest wax/rack/cello you've ever opened?

Also, Considering today's prices for unopened material .. assuming you paid close to market price ... What year would you draw the line at now, for opening a pack?

On a side note ... We're planning to do a couple of group wax breaks over in the Facebook group; Vintage Football Cards. What years would interest you most?

I've opened a bunch of 1971 packs :)

A few years ago I opened a '62 pack. And ate the gum.
Mistake on both counts.

Back in the 1990's there was a 1954 Bowman find and I bought a 1 cent pack and got an Otto Graham. I wish I still had it.

Probably opened a couple boxes worth of 1961 Nu-Card Football back in the late 80's. Also, maybe a Cello Box worth of 1970 Topps.

I've opened more than 1 box of 1981 Fleer In Action Football. Silly but I'm looking for PSA worthy cards.

Even though I wasn't born until 1960, I managed to open a 1951 Bowman football wax pack and entire box of 1957 Topps football high number cellos back in the 1970s when I was a teenager. The '51 pack had a card of Buddy Young, and the gum had pretty much turned to dust. The '57s had all three superstar rookies, Hornung, Starr and Unitas. I only paid $15 for the box of '57s, but opening it remains the worst financial decision of my life.

There was an unopened cello box of 47'-66 exhibits. I picked 3 packs and pulled Mantle and May's. I can say I pulled a mantle rookie....photo. he was pictured in the 51 uniform, not sure what pose

For me it was a 1958 cello pack due to knowing there was a high probability of pulling this card. Once again the centering gods punished me :mad:

How many cards in the pack John, 10? I take it the Brown was on the bottom. Anything else in it?

There were 12 cards in the cello and Jimmy was 4th from the bottom.

I got one of those packs as well and pulled the Blanda. It had 2 dinged corners and was O/C.

Oh that's still a fantastic Brown! Though you are right (to be a beggar and a chooser), you did get slightly hosed.

A couple of years ago I was given a 1968 Topps Football pack that was in pretty bad condition and unsealed. I was told that it was "popped." I guess the re-sealer forgot to take out the Johnny Unitas I pulled :)

I’ve opened scores of 1972 Sunoco Stamps “packs” in the past year. Love the price tag (maybe $2-3 per pack) and star power (probably 80 percent of packs have at least one HOF player or stars like Cliff Harris, Chuck Howley, or Harold Carmichael).

Not sure this counts! But it’s great fun. Next-oldest for me (in any sport) would be 1982 Topps Football when I was a little kid!

Back in the mid 1990s, when I was writing a monthly column for Baseball Hobby News, I wrote about the thrill of opening my first pack of cards in 1959. I talked about the thrill of opening hundreds of packs in 1960 and 1961 and how great it would be to go back in time and open one more of those vintage packs. Turns out, I didn't have to. One kind dealer enjoyed reading the column and sent me an unopened 1960 pack. Hall of Famer Early Wynn was the third card in the pack.

In the mid 1980's, there was a dealer selling 1959 Topps cello packs for $20.00. I think it was an Atlantic City show. Anyway, I bought one pack (Oh why did I not have the foresight to buy more) and pulled a Mantle a Mays and an Aaron.................Oh wait, that was my fantasy.......I pulled all commons. But it was a load of fun ripping that open.

1967 Philadelphia BITD

I just got a 1948-49 Topps Magic Hocus Focus bubble gum pack off ebay. Should I open it?

At the National last year I bought a partial unopened box 1961 Nu Card Football (these are college players). After opening the packs I will report the results are disappointing I should never have thought that nobody ever took a peek into these packs. Also the sales sticker said "SOLD AS IS" "PLEASE EXAMINE PACKS" and of course in the excitement of this find I never even saw that LOL. If I would have pulled an Ernie Davis card all would have been good, but alas Ernie wasn't to be found. I paid $170 for the partial box, and it was worth about half of that oh well live and learn. But I did finish my set (minus Ernie Davis the most $$$ card in the set) (Ernie listed at $65 in NM) also upgraded a ton of cards so I have a nice looking set now too. Plus I have an unopened box, several empty wrappers, and 30+ of the pennant inserts which might be tough to find. Also a couple of weird offer instructions to the retailer that were in the bottom of the box kind of like a flyer or order form.

I have a clear memory of opening 71 rack pack because I wanted the Andy Russell All Pro Card and it was on the front. Once I opened it, I found another one in between!

1969 Topps FB Rack pack
 

A few months ago opened a 69 FB Rack pack--although the pack had been altered all the cards were about mint.

1971 cellos. In the original boxes. In 1977. A candy store near my home had a partial box of them on the counter and I bought all of them. Best card I recall pulling was Namath. Wish I'd held onto the unopened instead...but you can't blame an 11 year old kid for busting packs!
