Cheapest HOF Game
1 Attachment(s)
In a drawer somewhere, you know that you've got a Joe Cronin that the dog chewed on. A Lou Boudreau that met some bicycle spokes. An Arky Vaughn that went through the washer. They're a bit worse for the wear, but these guys are hall of famers. Don't let them sit in dark anonymity in the bottom of that drawer. They deserve better.
Let's see them. Better, let's play a game with them. The point of this game is to put together the least expensive hall of fame collection that we, collectively, can manage. The game has four rules: (1) Each post must feature a card of a hall of famer. This card must: (2) have been issued while he was an active player, and either: (3) be of a player who hasn't yet appeared in this thread, or (4) if it is a player who has already appeared in the thread, the card that you post must cost less than the last card posted of that player. For example, the card in this first post is of Mel Ott. I paid $3 for it. So the second post in this thread must either be of a player other than Mel Ott (and so is legal under rule #3) or it must have cost less than $3 (and so is legal under rule #4). So get out your beaters, and let's find the cheapest HOF set that we can put together. This is a 1941 Double Play Mel Ott. Like so many DP cards, some kid cut it in half. Unlike most, that kid changed his mind and glued it back together. And, at some point, he also cut off a slice of the bottom of the card for no reason that I can tell. |

Attachment 351717 I've had this '52 Larry Doby card since my ill-fated HoF project in the early 80s. I wouldn't even want to guess what I paid but it couldn't have been much more than $5 so let's go with that. |
A 55 Mantle for $25. A Double Play Ott for $3. What I want to know - How many of these are for sale at these low prices? :D
|
You can find all sorts of HOFers on ebay ("haven't authenticated so I'm selling as a reprint...I think it's legit, though") for under $20.:)

To be fair, I bought that mantle in 1989, lol. I was 13 and it was my first Mick! I had to make a few payments at my LCS before it was mine. Still have it all these years later.

Mantle for $8 from eBay, circa 1999. Helps that he was extra (triple?) printed!

This was one of the cards my dad collected as a kid. When I was 10 I was showing off the card to my friends. When I got back home I didn't take the card out of my pocket and it went through the wash.

First T206 I got. Didn't even know he was in the hall.
Of course this is a thing where someone collecting a long time has an advantage. 1978, maybe very late 77 this cost me 20 cents. Yes, the tears are worse than they seem. http://www.net54baseball.com/picture...pictureid=4729 |

I don't think I own this one anymore, I think I passed it on to another board member at one time. It was given to me for free by a board member years ago and I felt it was part of the hobby, not part of my collection so passing it on seemed the right thing to do.

That is an ee-yaw card for sure. Nice centering!

The Little Wonder Picture Series (1923)
W515-2 is loaded with Hall of Famers, and I've got a complete set -- most of them are really beat up because I purchased about half the set for $100 at the White Plains show a few years ago. Included in the lot was this Ruth:
